Luxury, old fashioned train rides??

The missus loves period movies (especially mysteries) and the idea of the old romatic luxury train rides (think Orient Express, Mystery of the Blue Train, etc...).

Has anyone actually taken any train tours or even known someone that has?

Does anyone have any experience or info about them.

I saw an article on one called the Rocky Mountaineer the other day that has a chef that was trained in Michelin starred restaurants.

I'd like to surprise her with a vacation on one, maybe in the fall or next spring.

if it's pulled by a coal fired locomotive, stay in an enclosed car.

I wish I knew more to help you out!
Two weeks from now my family is going on a short trip to DC trainbound which will be my daughter's 1st trainride. Should be fun. I grew up on the steam excursions of 4501 and such... so I will have the most fun of all. I hear that some of the midwest rides have lost some of the "perks" such as fine dining, but I am in the east- what do I know... would still like to do a trip out there though!

We rode the cumbres and Toltec when I was a kid. Cool but only a few hours long.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas has a dinner train. It leaves from town and has elegant dinning and just returns to the station. It is a couple of hours as I remember. No real journey. It is old style, not modern at all, except heat and AC.

Thanks all. Keep it coming. With just a little info trickling in, it'll help in the long run.

This is probably pretty mundane, but we took that train from Willliams (?), AZ to the Grand Canyon a few years back. Stayed at the canyon & hiked around. We enjoyed it & did it because we talked about it for some time & just decided one day to do it.

Try Googling, "Trains with Pullman Cars."

You'll find listings of train routes that have the sleeping cars, dining cars, etc. that travel various routes around the U.S.

I'd look into the route from the NW coast to Banff in Canada . They have truly luxurious dinning cars and coaches, from a grander era.
I think there are some restored coaches on some of the runs.

Probably the most expensive in N.A.

I won't be finding out how good it is unless I win the lottery... https://www.rockymountaineer.com/en_CA_ON/

This. I've been working on a show about trains for a kids network and this is super scenic.

I'll even add the White Pass & Yukon route in Skagway, Alaska. It's 3+ hours long or more depending on what you add to it...It's absolutely gorgeous!

Not a luxury ride but I did the Gerogetown Loop in CO when my kids were little.

Photo Gallery | Georgetown Loop Railroad

I would be interested in any ride with live steam!

If you make it down to Peru google the Hiram Bingham Orient Express that runs from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. Do it during daylight. Just awesome and the best way to get to Machu Picchu.
