So that's what $200k looks like
Friend stopped by with a new toy.
Phantom Flex 4k. It's a super slo mo camera. Shoots 1,000 frames per second at 4096 x 2160. That means 10 seconds of footage played back at a normal 30 FPS is 5.5 minutes long. Has 128 GB of internal RAM. Data dumps to swappable 2 TB SSD's. Really slick bit o kit.

Part of his business will be renting it out, $5k per day or $20k per week.
Otherwise he'll be using it for his own shoots / projects.

10 seconds = 5.5 minutes? When I was 18 that could have made my sex life seem a lot more interesting.

20k/ week!? That makes the rental rates on commercial cranes downright cheap, and they cost much much more to buy and maintain!

I would have guessed aircraft impact testing - the old chicken in a cannon test.

Can't wait to bump this thread in a few years when all that capability is available in a cheap used cell phone.

Sports movie production companies like Red Bull Media and Brain Farm are doing amazing things with these. Gimbal stabilization, drones, helicopters, all add up to awesomeness.

Not really..... Google videos of cranes falling. Pretty common for someone to bite off more than they should and lay the crane down and total the million dollar crane, plus do a few more hundred K in damage to stuff around it.

Professor Harold Edgerton would be proud... amazing for material science work, sports mechanics, chemicals and biological reactions, special effects for graphic work, the list is long...

Tomorrow he will be at a track south of Ft Worth with a group of Lamborghini owners grabbing content for his reel. Next month he is taking a side trip after a gig in Washington state, there is an animal trainer in Canada who has big cats and bears he wants to film. Just after I took that picture my neighbor Tom came out and I called him over. Tom is the Marketing guy for GM, specifically Cadillac, and knew immediately what he was looking at. Invited Shane down to the Austin F1 track in October when they roll out the new CTS models. I'm definitely going along for that shoot.

Gone are the days of silver halides huh? This think completely digital? With optics, sensors and processing speed doing crazy things, I think that in a very short order we may see some really amazing things that have never been seen before. If there was a way to capture the space between the peak / troph of a particular light beam wave length, what would be?

While you might think the rental price is astronomical but you have to remember this camera won't be state of the art for long and the rental company has to maximize their ROI as quickly as possible. For example the Phantom Flex 2k is currently renting for around 5k a week and is just as (if not more so) capable as the Flex 4k in every aspect other than resolution. Also, being an item that gets use out in the field, they tend to get banged up through its normal course of operation so the rental house has to do a good deal of maintenance and QC on their products if they want to keep a good reputation with the very picky production community. Now I'm not saying that he/she can't do well renting the Flex out but it's not an instant license to print money. A few years ago that license would have been owning a good film recorder and letting it sit there cranking out thousands of prints of trailers for 2 grand per print. Now however with film distribution dead that business is dead too and perhaps creating the DCP files for the digital delivery of trailers is the way to go. I wish you friend the best of luck with his endeavor! Michael
