New fangled liight bulbs, FAIL

The new and improved light bulbs fail significantly in less time as advertised. The retailers won't stand behind them. Some as soon as six months, I mark them with a sharpie and keep the receipts. Manufacturers ignore my calls, retailers say "not our problem".

They publish the "lifetime" in big letters on the package.

The warranty claim requirements in fine print are outrageous.

They ignore any contacts not strictly adhering to the fine print.

They can't lose. The average consumer won't sue and probably doesn't have grounds, given the fine print. There's no regulatory agency that cares.

Just another every-day scam.

I agree, the new CFL bulbs dont last. Ive fallen for the LED scam now. They cost a fortune compared to the old bulbs. Im putting the install date on them as well. Not that it does any good.

The CFL bulbs fail on me, too...months is all I get.
I buy them in boxes at Costco now.

No CFL's for me.....I converted 3 CFL sconce fixtures to candelabra base incandescent because the specific bulb for that fixture was not dimmable.
I'm trying LED's in fixtures that are cycled on/off frequently.
I use dimmers on most light switches, so prefer incandescent because the special dimmer switches for led or CFL are pricey.....
Mom-in-law gave me her stash of 100 watt bulbs.......about 10 years worth.

I haven't had a problem with CFLs or LEDs. I think I may have had 1 or 2 fail quickly, but that's out of a pretty big number of bulbs that I've used over the years. Incandescents did have a pretty long history and very few parts to go bad or be bad, but I have had a couple go bad quickly and have even had a few actually explode over the years. You've got to figure that with less history and quite a few more components to go bad, the failure rate will probably be a bit higher. If you want a better warranty, buy a better brand.

I'm also having good luck with LED bulbs.

IKEA brand LED bulbs or the Phillips 60w equivalents from homedepot. I don't own an incandescent bulb or cfl. All led all over.

I have replaced nearly every bulb in the house with CFL or LED. The CFL bulbs seem to last me about 4 years, but less if the light fixture lacks ventilation, causing the ballast electronics to get hot. The LED bulbs haven't had a failure yet. The remaining incandescent bulbs last a year or less.

I have been CFL for many years and bringing in LED now on the spot lights, as those have always been pricy, even as incandescent versions. The LEDs were not terribly good with 2 instant failures - back to Costco. The CFL last many years. I'd say 3-5. Much better than incandescent. Plus, they use 20% and less power. If you change your whole house to CFL/LED, you will definitely notice it on your power bill ...

Had ~20 LED bulbs for two years. Outside lamps are exposed to temps and turn on sunset. So far no failures.

I don't like the light the CFLs give off. I have a few and replaced them with incandescents. CFLs don't last in enclosed fixtures, so I'm using them up in some out of the way enclosed fixtures. I'm replacing other bulbs with them with LEDs as they go bad. The LEDs I installed 3 years ago are still doing fine and look like incandescents.

I've never had an LED fail and there are at least 30 or 40 of them in the house. Most are Cree (Ecosmart) recessed ones though, and they're supposed to be good from what I've read.

I've had really good luck with CFLs, they are especially nice in hard to reach areas. My porch lights used to be about a monthly change with incandescent, now I can't remember the last time I changed one. I'm too cheap for LED though.

Good to know, how has the weather been up there? Been a super mild summer here.

I don't care for CFL. They don't last, and the flavor of Hg in them is not to my liking.

Have you tried any of the other light temperatures? I don't like the low temps at all but like the daylight bulbs in the garage. Though they are all going to LED for better light.

Every philips LED bulb I've bought since 2010 is still working fine for me. Expensive, but 0 failure rate. I've used them in nearly every socket. Have a few CREs too- those also have not failed. I never bought a single CFL, because CFL makes me vomit.
