Travel coffee mug recommendations

Tired of wearing my coffee in the morning. Had to stop and change my shirt on the way to work this morning.

Just a few requirements in order of importance.

1. doesn't leak from the seal when I drink

2. dishwasher safe

3. under $20

4. can keep coffee relatively warm

Nice.

Peppy, I stopped by your Tastee Freeze a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure I was going that way or I would have emailed...stopped and asked if you were around. Ordered a bag of fries and scooted. You staff is really great!

Great place!

Don't know if you go to garage sales or not. I seldom do, but we went to a couple some weeks ago. I picked up three good mugs, one of which was the same as the one Sid likes. I think I paid $2 for all three.

I picked up a Stanley coffee mug, made by the company that makes vacuum thermos bottles. It's metal and has a cool green wrinkle finish. It's built like a tank!

+1 on Contigo (think it's the "Contigo Extreme", about $20-$25).

Holds up well, doesn't leak. AND the handle has an integrated clip / hinge point so it clips onto my laptop bag so I have both hands free walking around - big bonus.

Keeps coffee warm in single-digit temperatures for over an hour. That's pretty good. The only one I've seen better is a funky space-age one I have with a vacuum chamber in between the inner and outer walls as well as a thermal break where the two shells connect to the bottom and top rings - pretty expensive and no clip handle. I bought it about 20 years ago for maybe $30 or so (probably would be $100 now). That sucker will keep drinks warm for 6-8 hours in a freezing cold car - kind of amazing.

I'm going to try one of the Contigo mugs and see if I can screw that one up.

Changed my life. Coffee is too hot to drink when I get to work.

If you have Prime, it's part of the Prime day deal right now, under $19 shipped

I dont like the contigo...

Reason 1: you make your coffee and leave a bit on an air space. The air inside heats up, now you tip the cup to your lips, press the button and open the valve and you get a shot of hot pressurized coffee on your lips.

Reason 2: you cant tell when the coffee is about to hit your lips when you press the button to open up the valve.

The lack of a good travelers mug is something I have contemplated for a number of years.

You say max is $20 but what would you actually spend for a 'good' coffee cup that looked nice, was functionally superior, and didnt leak or spill?

I like Contigo, but admittedly the second point is an issue with all travel cups in my experience.

I found one in Walmart that was great:
Aladdin Recycled and Recyclable 16 oz. Tumbler - Walmart.com
screw on lid with twisting opening to drink or close it
no metal so you can microwave the coffee before you leave to be sure it's hot

Very sturdy. But won't exactly fit all cupholders.

My contigo after the wash cycle. It gets pretty beat up. The instructions say only the lid can go in the wash.

Mine squeaks and whines as steam escapes. This is my third one. The new ones got gross because you can't clean the lid. One coffee w cream, and it gets pretty nasty.

I have an OXO stainless insulated travel mug that works pretty well. It seals very well, insulates decently, and is easy to open and drink from.
The only issue is that it technically isn't dishwasher safe.

The only way to prevent spills 100% is w/ a screw top. Trudeau for me exclusively.

Ok, I got my Contigo mugs yesterday.

Coffee was still HOT after an hour + drive. There is a bit of an after taste that I didn't like, but I hope that goes away as I cycle more coffee through it.

There is definitely a learning curve to drinking out of it.

Thanks for the help.

Too late and I'm not a lot of help because my wife bought the mug, but it is double sided aluminum... very well insulated, keeps hot stuff hot and cool stuff cool... which is kind of a waste on me because I don't drink ice water and for the most part I don't drink hot coffee in the car (except for road trips.)
