Apple Watch March 9

March 9 is when the Apple Watch will be launched. Or shortly thereafter.

We talked about it last year, but with a few more months of contemplation, what are we thinking now?

Here is a fairly skeptical article which lists some of the issues people see.

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/03/02/technology/apples-new-job-selling-a-smartwatch-to-an-uninterested-public.html?_r=0&referrer=

I still think I'd like one, if the battery life is tolerable and the price is as well.

The "Power Reserve" setting sounds interesting. When you're going to be away from power, or simply don't need your watch to do anything but tell time, you could switch the watch to this setting.

I'll be all over it, call me a fanboy or whatever, all the reviews say most of the goid watches are only "good" so I'm hoping Apple can add some extra cool factor.

Most tech mags are already poo pooing it

I don't need a watch on my wrist to duplicate a phone in my pocket. I'm out.

I'm no fan boi of any framework. Apple is evolving into the next MS. The watch, without ground breaking battery tech , is DOA. Sure the Apple fan base will spend their bucks but the real money won't

OK but what about the added convenience?

No way. I enjoy my phone for what it is, but there are times it needs to stay off stowed in a backpack. I will still want time, so I am old school on the watch. It needs to go without batteries.

I really don't care what time it is. I bought a Pebble a year or so ago and that thing lasted 10 minutes on my wrist. What a clunky POS! I have high hopes for the iWatch, but as with everything, its the apps that will make or break it.

A solution to a problem no one had. Im out too. Used to work for Samusng and so many co-workers would wear the give-away device so the execs could see what loyal sheep they were....no other reason. Definitely out.

Meh, I like a real watch.

We'll likely find the smart watches as a category fail for a similar reason as LED watches.

LED/LCD were all the rage for a while and died out mostly because it's easier to tell time on an analog.

Agree IMHO they are a solution in search of a problem.

Apple is very selective about the products it sees to production, and will only create something if they think it will change people's lives. I wouldn't underestimate them. Dig up the old iPad thread.... you guys were all saying it was just a big iPhone, yet look what its done to enrich people's lives. Its an incredible tool.

Hey I'm a fanboy but Apple have had their share of products before their time.

The precursor to the iPad was the Newton. I had a couple. Still have one tucked away somewhere. Loved it. Was before its time though same as Macintosh Portable, Macintosh TV, Pippin, and emate.

An electronic box strapped to my wrist with a cheap plastic or rubber strap will never replace a finely crafted stainless steel mechanical analog timepiece. Two completely different devices...one which is inspired by an appreciation for machines, precision manufacturing and tasteful aesthetics vs one that is a made-in-china piece of cheap electronics to duplicate those already in my pocket.

Kind of like the curved TV set. No functional benefit what-so-ever but offered to the masses because it can be made, not because it should be made.

I got a Samsung GearFit watch for Christmas. I used it for about a week, then ditched it. It's neat but honestly I found I was still pulling my phone out of my pocket all the time. In the end it was just a notifier that I needed to pull out my phone and reply to text or email that I had read on my watch.

I remember a time, decades ago, when everything MSFT did was said to be gold. Yep, when sooooo many people own the rocketing stock of something... Well, listening to the vaporware rallies gets old.

So... you would wear a clunky POS if it played Angry Birds?

I'm thinking that all aspects of the product offering need to be compelling. -YMMV
