Trouble shooting my HP laptop...

I have an HP Presario 14 inch laptop that I bought 16 months ago. It has windows 8 and my printer is an older HP Photosmart C4580.

There is a shimmy on the bottom right hand corner of the screen making the icons virtually unreadable. There is no sound at all either. Are these kinds of faults related?
Any suggestions on a fix? Does HP have a bad reputation?

Any suggestions for a non Apple/ibm compatible laptop computer that I should look at in the next few months? I just use a laptop for leisure, emails etc. Use it about 3-4 hours a day.
Your thoughts are appreciated!
Guy

Trouble shooting a laptop

Just stand closer or shoot from a rest. Take careful aim and squeeze the trigger. Works every time!

If I had to guess on the screen issue, I would say it is something in the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard. Either the cable (most are flex cables that look like copper wires in plastic film) has a break or the connection is loose. Overcrank the hinge or slightly torque it and you can get a break.

No sound sometimes can be something simple like one of the audio controls set to mute. I think my old HP laptop had some special speakers and had two or three audio controls and settings. Hit the mute on one and it affected the sound overall.

If I was drinking, I'd have the drink flowing back up my nose.

I was going to ask why he needed to shoot the laptop.

Beauty.

I can tell you that my wife has had a Surface for over a year and loves the thing. We are a bi-OS/MS family so I feel comfortable comparing Apple and Mircrosoft machines.

She works for the government so MS was a requirement for her. The Surface is a ral pleasure.

Two of the dirtiest lines I have read on Pelican in a while.

I would see if they could cover it under some sort of warranty. If not, then the mode of purchase (Visa, MC, etc) may have some sort of warranty. I would definitely get working on replacing the machine asap.

I am happy that you could find some humour in my spelling of troubleshooting. There is not a day goes by that I don't learn something from you all. Keep it up!

Aragorn probably has it right. I'm an idiot and this is foreign language to me.

It might be the video card, connector, or the screen itself for the wiggling display portion.
Occams Razor.
Only part of the display is affected.
But then add in no sound and it might be a common source like the mother board or internal connections.

(geez people cut the chatter and help this guy)

The HP laptops are too heavy to skip, they just sink. The printers will float if you take out the ink cartridges and burn them.

I bought a Lenovo....cheap and I don't care if it blows up. I back everything up once a week.

I will NEVER own a HP anything again.

Tech support sucks donkey balls. Hello, this is Dave in Bombay......yeah right.

Dispose of poisonous electronics frequently.
Trust personal information to be secure in 'the cloud'.

Do not like.

Cloud? Hell no, unconnected hard drive that has no way to be accessed except by me. I don't allow pics of myself to last more than 3 days on the web.

I could make peace with using windows, but if I had to use an HP ever again, I'd take up carving in stone tablets....

No offense intended. Just saw that as an opportunity for a bit of humor! Good luck getting your computer problems resolved!
