buying flowers online. question.

i know there are gonna be the ones that chime in saying flowers are a scam, a waste of money..wah!!

whatever..my wife likes them occasionally and i typically drop the ball and forget. my wife hit her 3-month on the job mark today and i wanted to send her flowers. Dual Income, no kids!! wtf..rolling in dough i tried to call a local florist down the street from her office. $150 with all fees. Fees? one dozen red roses.

i went online just to check. i got a dozen sent in a vase, random card..$47 with a retail me not coupon.

i just checked tracking numbers. that dozen flew out from Garland texas yesterday. TEXAS!! how does that make sense? they are over nighting it. how can they do it so cheaply? i'm not a business person..i have having a hard time wrapping my mind around the business model.
why wouldnt the online retailer use a closer florist..that bought into their network?

i sure as eff hope she gets the flowers. she had a crazy week and i am ready to party..happy wife, happy everything..right?

I don't know Vash how this makes sense. But part of it certainly is that TX is not overrun with money as the Bay Area is. Here it almost seems if it isn't $150, it can't be a good bouquet.

I have always used Fleurop to send flowers to family and friends in Europe. It is a network of florists and the closest one will deliver to your destination. I think int the old days you could walk into any member florist to order and make flowers appear at any destination. Nowadays of course you just order online. Blam - 2 minutes. It is the best way to make family and friends very happy with the least amount of effort. They will even include a nice hand written note you type. 2.5 minutes!

I have been disappointed nearly every time I have bought flowers online. Twice the flowers never showed, on MD and VD. Never again.

Now, I stop by a street florist that makes arrangements that are as good and fresher then the online places, for ˝ the price. Sorry McCann, keep your 1-800 flowers to yourself.

+1 This makes so much sense. Cheaper and you get to choose your own flowers. All this remote buying clothes and flowers online makes no sense. I like to see what I am buying before I buy it.

There probably on the same plane, in the same box, as the roses being sent to your local florist. They ship them all like fish - overnight.

You'd have gotten more points for hand delivering the flowers... Then you could get by with a $20 bouquet from Costco!

I disagree. Ladies are strange. They like the pomp and circumstances of a flower delivery. The big bouquet paraded across the sea of cubicles, the announcement, "so and so, got flowers!". I imagine it's a big thing for the ladies.

Men, we would kill ourselves. It's like getting a new dirt bike exhaust. You know it. We well start it up and rev it. Then the guys stand around analyzing the sound and critiquing the "tinny ness" .

Hope she likes them. Hell I hope she gets them!!!

I had 2 dozen red Roses delivered to my wife yesterday. Bought them online for $54 (in Wisconsin). They were absolutely spectacular.

They are idiots. Same BS every valentines day in the office. It is a pissing match who gets the biggest bouquet. I don't get it. Wife leaves the house in the morning, flowers could be right there, but they HAVE to show up in front of coworkers ...

Right?!

My wife is pretty tame. Phew! Figured I'd do something special to make up for all my "air balls" of the past

Don't get me wrong - guys are idiots too, as you point out. I.e. trying to have a drink downtown is impossible sitting outside on a Saturday night. EVERY idiot has to drive by in their car, truck or on their motorcycle, revving, blaring stereo and making a bunch of noise. "LOOK AT ME!!!" Strangely it is often in totally unimpressive rides or on "me too" Harleys.

I buy flowers for her & Mom often..
no reason other than their smile..
never on VD or MD...
and never delivered to work..
you want to make her smile..
not impress her co-workers..

My wife really like getting flowers at work for our anniversary and Valentines day or other special occasions. For sure the flowers on the desk from thoughtful spouse make brownie points with most ladies.

I always used a local florist that is just a few blocks from her office. I gave them a price range and they fixed up something that was well received.

My wife retired last month so no more flower delivery.

Last year sent funeral flowers via on-line service two states away so that they arrived in case we didn't make it in time. Payed about $75.00 for what looked like a nice boquet. When we arrived (late) the flowers were so bad that we all laughed about them. It actually broke-up the seriousness of the occasion.

You do realize that she will be receiving a box, right? When you get flowers through the mail it is not going to be made up in a vase. She will need to unpack it and arrange herself.

Nice of you to try to make her day after a rough week.

Once upon a time I owned a flower shop. I am going to recommend to all you gentlemen to buy local but if you must buy online: PassionRoses. They are one of the farms I used and they also provide the flowers for the Rose Bowl.

I agree with Stephanie. My wife worked at a flower shop years ago and I am still friends with the owners. From them I learned to pick a dollar amount and a general type of arraingement (fall, tropical, summer, pick you holiday, etc) and then let the designer do their stuff. Letting the designer have a little freedom usually results in an arraingement that is better than the stock photos on the website. Costs more for sure, but much higher impact. I haven't ordered a straight up dozen roses in 15+ years.

I took PorscheGAL's advice once and now call a local shop in the town where my wife works. Much better deal, and you aren't paying 1-800-FLOWERS or FTD a hefty markup. Locals work on local word of mouth, you know.
