Shoes on the carpet... yea or nay?

Never thought that much about it. I just wipe my feet on the mat and go about my business. A friend of mine prefers that people would not wear shoes in his house. He doesn't insist on it (or even ask for that matter), but seems a little bothered when people do.

I'm the same way, wipe my feet and go on. I've seen some houses where they ask you to remove shoes at the door due to young kids that crawl on the floor. Some of Thuy's family asks you to as well(cultural thing)

We are just lucky if the boys attempt to wipe their feet... Our carpet is pretty well wrecked at this point. Going to wait until they are a bit older and then replace it.

I guess it depends on whether you own the carpet or it owns you! I have a very large Tabriz carpet on my living room floor that gets walked on every day and it is probably worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $20K!

We tore the carpet out of our house the year after we moved in to reveal nice hardwood floors. Being on a farm, with alot of mud, and a stone driveway, and many pine needles, it's impossible to keep the floors clean, so we have a big area rug in the living room that gets swept about every day. If it is muddy, we have muck boots that are left at the door, but I generally wear my shoes everywhere.

Shoes off at the door is the rule in our house. My wife and I are both pretty clean people.

I grew up wearing shoes in the house - our earlier house had stone (polished granite) floors, our later one hardwood/parquet and carpet. When I got a flat with a friend when I was in art school it was a no-shoes house - she was from a Japanese family - and I've been no-shoes ever since. Wearing shoes inside a house now feels odd to me, though for whatever reason I sometimes do so in my mom's house.

Ridiculously clean carpet is important for some.

If I go to someone's house and they request it or make it obvious that is their preference I have no issue with taking off my shoes.

At my house in the winter my shoes are on until I go to bed. In the summer if my feet are hot I will take them off but that is for my comfort.

Carpet can be cleaned just like the wood or tile floor, just a different process.

My house is all mexican tile.

Nevertheless....I have both 'indoor' and 'outdoor' flip flops.

I never wear shoes in the house. In Canada I doubt if you find many respectable households that do.
I would be horrified to wear my shoes in someone else's house and would consider it rude if someone wore them in mine. Indoor shoes and slippers are acceptable.

I think the PO of my house wore shoes inside, when we tore up the carpet we couldn't believe the filth, I'll never live in a house with carpet again.
We have throw rugs in places, they get pro cleaned once a year. Except for the one real persian carpet we have, but that is kept in a low traffic area. Shoes on that one would be met with deadly force.

Walking on carpet with shoes seems pretty silly to me... Walking in the house with shoes is equally silly...

You are dragging crap/dirt throughout your home. Thats more sweeping, more cleaning, more vacuming, etc... Why create more work for yourself? Don't folks value their time? (or their wife's time... Or their housekeepers time ).

Carpets hold dirt like a sponge. Not to mention, they get stained and ruined easily... Would you throw your clothes on the ground and walk on them?

Most europeans I know absolutely take off their shoes before entering...

Most of my tenants, who are not europeans, look at me like I am an alien when I tell them they should take their shoes off to preserve their security deposits. They usually never do. By the end of a 2-3 year lease, the carpet is absolutely destroyed... On the flipside, the carpet in our home can go 20 years with no issues...

Our house is spotless. You can eat of the floor...

I'm guessing that many of you OCD'ers don't have dogs or cats.

I wear flip flops most of the time so it wouldn't matter, but just for the sake or argument let's say I was wearing regular shoes and someone insisted I take my shoes off to keep from soiling their precious little carpet.

I'd say never mind, I'll just go someonewhere else.

How do you keep your feet and socks free from normal bacterial growth?
If you've developed some sort of scientific breakthrough, please share.
