Getting ready to assemble and sight in my new deer hunting rig, Henry .44 with a Burris Fullfield II. Can't wait to go fishing in the FL keys with my dad. Many happy memories on Big Pine key.

32 days till I'll be chasing Bull elk in Az. with string and stick. I go back another 6 weeks later for General Coues deer. My 2 favoritist game species, pursued my favorite ways! This year is my dream season! And while I wait for those hunts, Tater and I are trying to get him on the kill board. He's taken bagged quarry, nothing wild yet (Tho it should be any day now!).

Ayup, bout that time of year. I've regularly fished the smaller local rivers for salmon....a forty year habit is hard to break. My fishing buddy of 35 years died and it's not as much fun now, (gettin' old is not all it cracked up to be) but my SIL is taking up some of the slack.
I'll do an unarmed reconnaissance of a favorite spot later this week.

Someone here wanted to come along (don't remember who)...now is the time.

That's really taking it back, Jim.
Archery and falconry Good on you for taking on such challenges.
I guess that really puts the pressure on good calling?

Keep us posted on the outcome.

Was it a long wait for the elk permit, or is it easier to get one for archery hunting.
What area of Az will you be hunting?

Cheers Richard

Only if...
Lost Pepper in March to a pair of nest building red-tails in a new spot...telemetry only lasted 90 min w/ new batteries...GRRRRR!!!!
Trapped Tater as a sore hawk (sore=able to fly, but still learning to hunt from parents) in June...he gains confidence and progresses with each day. Waterproof UHF telemetry on him so I feel confident about not losing him. He's getting stronger and faster in his flying...he took a bagged pheasant out of the air yesterday!!! That was awesome! The Avian Flu Epidemic is really doing a number on the long wingers (people who fly falcons as opposed to hawks). Some are sitting on the sidelines, others are switching to micros or dirt hawks! THEN we have West Nile Virus to worry about while the hawk is in his mews!

Richard

I gave up 6 bonus points to pull this tag. I'll be in 6B...between Flagstaff and Sedona, east of "The Strip" and Mogollon Rim. For the Coues hunt, I just picked up a Zeiss 6x24 scope to put on top of my .25-06. Typical shots out there are 500 yds. That one only took 1 bonus point. Also dropped $800 on a new tripod for my binos. Don't get me started on my Sitka camo wardrobe!

Jim,
Sorry to hear that, every time they fly they are at risk, just like they would be in the wild.
It's been awhile, when you say micros are you referring to Merlins and Kestrels?
The idea always appealed to me, but watching a kestrel hunt dragonflys... now one that would fly on small birds would be a hoot.

I don't think i could kill an animal for sport anymore, but have greatly enjoyed learning trap/target shooting. The commitment to hunting is pretty intense. Lots of patience and getting to know nature.

Good stuff. I grew up fishing off the Ventura Pier. Used to sell the fish to the local Asians and go raid the motorcycle salvage yard nearby.

Yep...micro's are the ketty's, merlins and sharp shinned. You ever fly a coops? I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want a gos...but I think I need to try a free coops before screwing it up w/ a $6,500 Albidus Gos.

Had a Friend that flew a big aggressive coops, she was a beast. Temperament wise they can be a bit of a "face hawk". The short wings, especially the coops and gos are,to me, the most athletic flyers. The way they pick up speed, turn and maneuver and their willingness to go straight into brush is amazing.
That gos in the picture is gorgeous.

NICE Cliff! Anything on tap, or just the AO tag?

Quick...I like the shortwings for their ability to take multiple species of game. A big female would be a blast I'd bet...cottontails and quail in their sights and you have some pretty awesome flights! A buddy has one and works on a local college campus, they ambush sparrows 2-3 times a day. That bird gets a workout!

Yeah that is what I am thinking. I live on a recently closed golf course ,by next year it will have gone fallow enough for the rabbits to move back in,it already has tons of birds. Reintroduce quail, maybe pheasant... hmmm

Enjoy deep sea fishing and deer hunting, but not willing to hunt for sport, only if I (or someone else) will eat it.

Been a very long time since I've been hunting, would love to make a trip to the family property in Up-State NY, 100 or so acres in the mountains.

Even picked up a hunting spoon (although I still have the single shot that I always hunted with as a kid) just in case the opportunity arises Where our property is, you can only use shot guns..
