Yep, the article that I read today said that the first blast was equal to 3 tons of TNT and the second blast was equal to 21 tons of TNT. The video and images of the results are thoroughly impressive.

This is what happens when you don't worry about safety regs. Sure, let the company that deals with explosives and other hazardous chemicals have their website right in the middle of everything in a big port.

My ex-wife and her family live in Tianjin...

I have tried to parse where exactly this explosion happened but have not been able to...

Unfortunately I think it is near where she and her parents live...

I sent her an email, and tried to call her..

nothing yet but with the time difference one hopes for the best..

Best of luck, Tim. What a horrible accident.

Lots of damage. Only 50 listed as dead, but given that this is the Chinese govt, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a lot, lot higher.

My understanding from an article I read said at least 50 firefighters are dead.

I would say that 3 tons and 21 tons is a gross underestimate looking at these pics... Look how the building is shredded and the pile of shipping containers is buckled...

For reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_San_Bruno_pipeline_explosion.
It leveled a few blocks of houses near where I used to live.

First it was 12 firefighters, as of last night. Then it was 18 unaccounted for this morning. I wouldn't be surprised if it was whole companies of firefighters that perished in the 2nd blast, let alone the toxic fumes.

Looking at the pictures of the aftermath (like that shell of a building), I wouldn't be surprised if hundreds or even a thousand people died. It's hard to count the dead when they're vaporized, incinerated, or in tiny little pieces.

Godspeed.

Yea, but then look how uniformly and perfectly parked the car are. You'd think such a massive blast would have moved them considerably, no?

I agree but how far are those cars from the centre of the blast? The cars look like fire damage. By contrast, those shipping containers are immensely strong and looked at what happened to those...

Yup, I'm thinking the cars are fire damage and not blast damage. Look at the fireballs flying through the sky those catch a couple of cars on fire and it roasts the whole row....

Interesting thing is that even the cars that haven't caught fire have still had all the windows blown out. That takes a big shockwave.

Looks like the blast wave was deflected by buildings up ward, then the fire ball rolled through and
incinerated those cars.
I would like to see hi res satellite images or real time video from above.
I haven't really been following this, are they reporting a cause?

Tim,
Thoughts and prayers

Salvage titles for those.

Even in the US, chemical plants and refineries blow up. Good idea to keep that sort of stuff away from populated areas. But in China, they probably don't.

Not sure if you can see this, but it is pretty awesome. The reported death toll has got to be wrong.

Maybe calcium carbide hosed with water producing explosive acetylene. Boom. That's latest news.
