My 18 y.o. son and I went for a ride-along with a So Cal PD in their jet copter.

Best donation I ever made!

Among other things, my son was able to make out the logo on a suspect's tennis shoes, and we were able to see who walked up to open a door to an apartment when the foot cops knocked on the door. All with NO LIGHT ON.

Very handy for the street cops, but kinda creepy from a civil liberties perspective.

High resolution infra red.

35 years ago during an air show I had the opportunity to pan the infra red search camera on a new Aurora (Canadian version of the Orion sub hunter). Looking across the tarmac, I could make out the wallet in the back pocket of a guy walking away from the aircraft (and other things in the ladies walking toward).. I asked the tec what the degree differential might be he said he ,"Didn't know and if he did it was probably classified.)
It waas designed to pick up the thermal bloom from a nuclear sub.
Also useful for Search and Rescue.
Or finding dumb arse punks.

Nice video.

Best

About 30 years ago working for a defense contractor - there was a "demo" version of a Hi-Res infrared set up in a hallway. This product was used in the seeker of the control system for a missile. This "hallway" was about 100ft wide and more than half a mile long (this building was BIG.) Pointed down the hallway, you could look in the monitor and make out the writing pens in men's pockets - and the watches/necklaces/jewelry that folks employees were wearing.

Infra red military technology in the hands of local police strikes again! These laser and drone morons who interfere/place risk with aircraft need to go away for a long time.

Why is it that IR cameras do not show the sane detail as visible light cameras?. Is it a wavelength thing?

I dunno, but I suspect the military & intelligence communities have stuff that is much better than what the cops have.....probably 5 times (pick a number) better.

i was shown the latest piece of gear the El Paso police dept just bought..

bad guys are not gonna be safe. i met the pilot..he is one of my brother's best friends. he told me he will give me a ride (and my wife) next time i visit.

i'm trying to time a training day. they get to shoot autos out of a flying chopper. they train with the ft bliss guys. now that would be an awesome day.

i have the sharpie marker poise to strike that off the bucket list.

I slept at Holiday Inn last night. Infrared cameras work by sensing infrared energy (heat.) Since heat is transferred from molecule to molecule within an object - there is no definitive "line" of energy difference to be detected - objects appears blurry because there is typically a gradient of heat difference across the surface being observed. This is unlike a visible light camera - which detects the minute details of color differences in clothing, objects, flesh, etc.

I can't see ther video right now on the phone, but I think I know what it might be about.

Anyone who thinks a low-powered common laser pointer is dangerous to pilots who are just flying ....are not very well-informed.
No one is going blind, temporary or otherwise, by looking at a common low-powered laser from distance.
If the plane is more than 100 feet off the ground the laser pointer poses no threat.
Just like the idjusts who insist people turn off their cell phones on take off even though it doesn't make any diff.

The reason cops are going after laser pointers is because the cops are looking at us through things they most often should NOT be looking through (without a warrant), and those things are extremely sensitive to laser pointers.

If they minded their own damn bidness they wouldn't have to worry about laser pointers.

This damn wanna be private military crap is getting out of hand.

I always suspected those claims, and wondered if there was another motive.

Laser Pointer Safety - NEVER aim laser pointers at aircraft
