China or Oregon?

With a shift in the wind I woke up to a smokey mess. The entire city of Portland is innundated with smoke from forest fires. Makes me wonder if Beijing would be an air quality upgrade. It is something I really don't recollect seeing in my forty plus years living here. We often have nice sunsets in the summer from some smoke but this is something else!

Yeah, really bad. Took a forty mile ride today, around 12 noon we were on marine drive by the river and the smoke was getting bothersome.

Same all over WA or ORE due to the shift of winds in the past few days.....

I try not to dwell on the discomfort to me. My heart goes out to all that have lost everything. Thinking of the 3 firefighters that died on Woods Canyon Road just west of Twisp, WA........I know a guy that lost his home on that same road that day....They died trying to save his neighborhood.......Sad times.....Seems to happen every year lately.......

I remember making the drive from Salem to Sacramento one year when there were a lot of fires. At one in the afternoon in Redding it was like a solar eclipse, dark. Maybe were a mask or something if you have to take a ride. Or break out the trainer until it clears out.

I should call some of the guys I know from my flying days out of PDX - I'm guessing it's a PITA right now to keep schedules and get things in / out of places efficiently and safely. I dealt with "fire season" a few times flying around the Sierra Nevadas a few years back and it was a mess. You don't want to fly through the smoke - even using supplemental O2 it can give you a ripping headache and it shortens the replacement intervals of engine filters (piston aircraft) and can be detrimental to the life of turbine engines so you're always trying to get around / over it - not to mention dealing with TFRs if you're VFR (going IFR is helpful).

I feel for you guys out there. Looks like a mess. Gonna be some wicked mudslides when the rains kick in a few weeks from now.

We are currently surrounded by the fires. I feel for the families and friends of the lost firefighters and the folks who have lost their homes. At one point a news commentator said basically the whole of northern WA was on fire. The pic below shows what our air in Spokane has looked like on the worst days. We haven't been able to ride in 10 days or so.

Was on a 4 day MC trip in NE WA state last week. Sometimes you couldn't see the bike 1/4 mile ahead. I know guy that lost a house on the Rd where the 3 firefighters died. Sad
