Threads -British movie about nuclear war and it's aftereffects, a truly disturbing film. Makes "The Day After" look like a disney film
The Great Escape -still one of my favorites of all time, entertaining from start to end, and stars Steve McQueen (show respect to the man, you fools) Johnny Got His Gun -a very disturbing film. In my opinion, this should be required viewing for those studying war and why war is pointless. Apocalypse Now -Visually amazing movie, Ride of the Valkryes and helicopters, enough said Paths Of Glory -One of Stanley Kubrick's first films. Platoon -I heard this was a true story based on Oliver Stone's experiences in action. The Dirty Dozen -totally unrealistic, but you get Lee Marvin, Jim Brown, Charles Bronson and John Cassevetes all kicking Nazi ass in the same movie. Das Boot -Awesome movie. Much better subtitled then dubbed. Shows you how much these guys went through. Dr. Strangelove "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!" The Green Berets -Ok Im going to get flak for this, but I see this as a hysterical comedy. John Wayne, kicking ass in Vietnam, cmon! Last edited by Jared at Pelican Parts; 11-29-2002 at 02:03 PM.. |

The Longest Day...the first of the All Star cast big budget war flicks that were done in the 60's and 70's...... D Zanuck did it in Black & White because most of the WW2 film footage was in b&w. Also check out the technical advisors on the film......they were the guys whoses stories were being told on film and D Zanuck was a combat film photographer during WW2 and was at D Day.....So PRyan in my book sucks in comparison... it's revisionist history.
Tora Tora Tora and Battle of Britain were both good.....in BOB they actually used HE111's and ME109's in the film....they bought them as surplus from the Spainish Airforce. TTT was 12/7/41 and the bombing of Pearl Harbor from both the US and Jap point of view. Again both were allstar casts Das Boot......Directors cut, they built a replica of a U Boot in a sound stage in Hunland. All the filming was done inside the the Boot, they even got it so that water was dripping from a lamp shade in the background. Ultra realistic King Rat...based upon James Clavels novel of the same title set in a Jap prison camp Stalag 17.....Billy Wilders semi-comedy wt William Holden about a German prison camp Bridge over the River Kwai...Will Holden and Alec Guiness... building that bloody RR bridge in Burma for the Nippers during the Second big show............. All Quiet on the Western Front..... 1930, Eric Remarqus anti war novel brought to the screen..filmed down in Irvine, CA. MASH......Robert Altmans 1970 Classic...No need to say more..... The Train.....Burt Lancaster as a French RR man, trys to stop the retreating Huns from stealing a train full of art from Paris during WW2... made in 1965 Gudacanal Diary... Have to throw in a made during WW2 propaganda flick... made in 1943.....Marine action in the SP...William Bendix, Lloyd Nolan and a very young Anthony Quinn. Battleground....William Wellman director... 1949...Battle of the Bulge infantry in the trenchs ....Wellman during WW1 was a fighter pilot. Again from the guys who just got back from WW2...so the feel is closer to the real deal than PRyan ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apocalypse Now....Is based upon Joesph Condrads novella "Heart of Darkness" Capola's film is very surreal and is more about a journey into madness than about war. Harrison Ford has a bit part in the film as a young captain who drops a sheaf of papers in the scene where Martin Sheen is talking to the Generals. when Harrison did that bit the assistant director thought Ford was just being clumsy, Capola corrected him saying he was acting. Martin Sheen also suffered a heart attack during the movie. The movie was shot in the Philliphines and the US miltary wouldn't give any logistic help. wonder why. I'm not real crazy about this film BTW Love Strangelove....but classify it as a Black Comedy On the Beach.....Greg Peck and Ava Gardner.......the last of the human race down under waiting for the end after a Nuke war. You guys are forgetting:
A Bridge too Far - Cornelius Ryan's epic novel-cum-movie about Operation Market Garden. The Eagle has Landed - Also another movie from a novel, but Jack Higgin's classic, made corny for the big screen. The Thin Red Line - I really did enjoy this, despite it's length and "artistic" impressions. Pearl Harbor - Technologically brilliant, but a pathetic story, with weak acting and a very brittle plot.

U got me
I have never seen that movie. Enemy at the Gates had a great opening sequence but fell down after that. I am going to have to look for that one.

Tabs, as far as I know it is subtitled as the whole film is in German. "Stalingrad" makes "Enemy at the Gates" look like a romantic comedy. They should really have cast Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in it.

I'm in with Apocolypse Now and MASH. In addition, the first 45 minutes of Full Metal Jacket are amazing...the rest of the movie doesn't work as well for me.
Tora Tora Tora was also fantastic, especially on a big screen. It was great to see some accuracy in the hardware and software. Unlike movies like Battle of the Bulge (that's no Panzer IV). Patton also had it's moments... |

Nostatic, what did you think of the cardboard turret stuck to the bulldozer they tried to pass of as a Tiger in Saving Private Ryan? (The one used in the final seize scene in the French village.)

I actually didn't see that gaff. Sad to say, but I have only seen about half of SPR, and that was a network TV broadcast. I want to rent it though, as it seemed like a rather powerful film. I can overlook some technical inaccuracies if the movie has heart, but cardboard-on-bulldozer may be a bit tough to swallow. The Sherman tanks being passed off in Battle of the Bulge was too much for me, especially given the rather weak other aspects of the film (Telly Savalas's "they're bouncing off them like tennis balls" line aside).

SPR is sort of semi-powerful but all a bit candy coated. If you've seen Stalingrad, you'll know what I mean. Also, the depiction of German soldiers in SPR was very 70's in that they where all stupid and could only say "Nein", "Schweinhund" and "schnell schnell".
Crank your speakers up when the cardboard Tiger rolls into the village though, it sounds great. And keep an eye on the tracks/wheels.

As I often argue with my film school acquaintances, sound is over half the movie. If you get good sound design, you can pass almost any visual off on the public.
I'll check out Stalingrad. One of my guys at work is a total WWII buff and I'm sure he has seen it along with all the other suspects. |

To Our UK friends
Calling all Brits,
Any of you guys know where i can get a copy of the movie Threads? I cant seem to find it in America. Also, I'd need a version in NTSC? I cant remember what format we use, but I need the format for America. I just remember how messed up this movie was, I think it would be a good addition to my cult collection. |

Steve
Scott was good in the movie but as far as being the best movie ever......your wrong. The battle scenes were terrible btw.
The AFI just voted Orson Wells ...Citizen Kane as the best movie ever. It has been acknowledged as the best movie ever since I can remember 30 years or so. When u see a movie today..... it came from what Wells did. It really isn't a flashy movie and it bombed when it opened. But it was so inovative that it has set the standard for today. The last scene in Raider of the Lost Ark is essentially a copy in the last scene in Kane. |
