Cooks, Craftspeople, South Americans - What Is This Thing?
This is hammered copper. "Joao Martins Caldeireiro Lagos" is stamped on one side. Rounded on both sides, no flat resting surface. Appears to be tin or similar, plated with copper. Seals well but not watertight. Only handles are the two opposite the hinge, and the two handles or closure devices on either side.
![]() ![]() Any idea what it is for, where made, etc? Picked up at a junk store. Guessing it is some sort of cooking tool? But it won't sit on a burner. "Lagos" is in Brazil?

So, how would you use this on a glass top electric range?. I'm vacationing at a place with such a range.

Certainly looks like one--although it's a bit smaller than most I've seen. It's very cool, anyway!

Just noticed it's a glass top range. You need to vacation somewhere with better appliances.

Paella pans should be flat at the bottom.
Joao Martins is a typical Portuguese/Brazilian name (John Martin). Caldeireiro means pot maker in Portuguese and Lagos is a city in the South of Portugal |

Cockle clams.
I'm going to try making a wok ring from something. Thanks, Paco.

One thing I love about this website, is that someone is really an expert on just about every obvious and obscure topic. I don't mean wanna bee's. I mean real knowledge. It must be the brain and the Porsche interaction.

Couldn't you roll some foil up tightly and make a ring out of that to rest it on? Just an idea.

From the link above - Does this catplana pan need a wok ring?
Please describe the bottom of this copper cataplana pan. I read a review that said that a wok ring was necessary. If one is necessary or not, please explain why or why not. Thank you Krissie on Jul 4, 2014 Best Answer: The bottom of this pan looks exactly like the top. A wok ring isn't necessary; it's more a matter of preference. Because copper heats up so quickly & retains heat so well, some people prefer not to let their copper come into direct contact with their cookware

Sit it on top of a pot of boiling water - the heat from the steam will heat it very nicely (along with the entire kitchen so crank up the AC).
