Night Vision Getting Worse

Driving from. Monterrey CA to Portland OR. I'm reminded of how bad my night vision has become. I guess this is one of the perks of middle age.

Is there anything that can be done about this?. Like special treatment for the glasses, lots of carrots, etc?

Nighttime driving glasses.
Also heard if you supplement your entire diet with carrots, it might help.

Then your skin is going to take on an yellow/orange hue.

Could be early cataracts- yellowing of the lenses of the eye so that more light is required.

Also could be night myopia. At night, when there is less light, the pupils dilate and the eyes lose a little depth of focus, essentially making the vision about 0.5 diopters more nearsighted. If you wear glasses you could simply get some -0.50 OU clip-ons from an optical shop. Or have a pair of a pair of glasses made that are 0.5 D less than your regular Rx.

No complaints on night driving yet, but as soon as I turned 40 I noticed I felt the need to turn additional lights on more often, for example, at the kitchen sink, the usual kitchen lights would've sufficed, but now I turn on the light above the sink.

Old age?

I can still read the fine print without glasses, and can make out the dots on the i's and the curves on the j's.

Presbyopia (old eyes)- your eyes are beginning to have difficulty adjusting for different distances because the lens in the eye is getting stiffer. Brighter light constricts the pupils and increases the depth of focus. I see reading glasses (soon) in your future.

Have you had laser surgery on your eyes for vision correction?
I have heard that the glare seems to be worse with some people after.

I first noticed a longer period of adjustment to low light conditions in my 50s. As long as I have time to acclimatize, it's not too bad.
So far, getting older beats the heck out of the alternative.

HID headlights help a lot. I won't own a car without them these days. I also avoid riding my motorcycle at night though auxiliary lights help.

As for reading glasses, I'm still holding out a 1.25x but I can't read anything even remotely close to my face without them. Natures wins in the end...

Hah.

Everyone at work kids me about being the old man yet they wear glasses and can't keep up in a fairly physical job.

Consider your lifestyle and how it's affecting you as you age.

I would stop,

Eating crap
Drinking
Riding elevators

I would start,

Eating ingredients instead of dishes. I don't obsess over diet but, for example, do crack open a can of cold spinach and Popeye it down. Also try and eat a lot of color at every meal.
Exercise and sleep well.

As far as night vision try using your side vision. Won't help with glare but you can see farther.

See an eye doc.

I had cataract surgery about one and a half years ago - massive improvement in night vision.

Same Problem, at 52 i have a pretty substantial and growing Cataract in my right eye, with another smaller one in the left. Up here in the north the surgery is about $5500 for the one eye. Gotta wait it out a little longer at that expense..
