He's in town giving a lecture at USC. We went to the Marmalade Cafe at the Grove in West Los Angeles. Nice guy. We spent a few hours chatting. It turns out he and I both went to the University of Massachusetts. The restaurant served me a turkey burger instead of the Lamb burger that I ordered, so they comped my meal. It was still a good burger. Mike took a selfie of us and said he'd post it later. Nice guy. I've met probably 100 Pelican around the World. All good times.

Nice! Thanks for the post, Hugh.
PS - Never heard of a lamb burger.....interesting. How could the kitchen get that mixed up?

Two of the nicest guys on PPOT, together - the waitresses must have been giggling with delight.

Because the Eastern European dark swartzy male waiter with a thick accent didn't write it down! Nice waiter however, and he wanted to make it right.
from JYL, "Two of the nicest guys on PPOT, together - the waitresses must have been giggling with delight." Please, two middle aged slightly paunching guys in West Los Angeles, (Apologies to Mike) waitresses don't even see us. I've never had a lamb burger either, but I expected it to be sort of like a gyros in a bun. It ended up being cheap, two beers, two ice teas, his shrimp on a platter of whatever kale thing they served him in West Los Angeles and a $10 tip for about $40 total. That's cool but the Grove is not in WLA unless they moved it(?) East of Farmers Market when I left town a month ago.

No offense to the rest of my pelican brethren, but I have fallen short on the opportunities in the past several years to meet with some of you. I figured after I met Mike and Hugh it couldn't get any better. First class guys.

There is no way I'd go to a dinner with Lubey and Hugh!
There'd be nothing but crazy talk about existential motor oil and anecdotes about LA starlets with great personalities. If they picked up the tab (the real tab not the verbose psycho) I'd reconsider the source and cause of my angst. |

Too bad, I'll be at CBS tomorrow and Thursday. Our ID lets us walk straight from the stages over to the Grove. I've had the lamb burger, not bad but I prefer the charcutterie platter at Morels just down the way, sitting on the patio and watching the girls stroll by.
We'll have to have another Pelican get together before the holidays now that it's cooler.
