Excess road noise on Touareg after service

My '05 Touareg (TowRig) with 83,000 miles is transmitting a lot of road noise into the cabin. Granted it could use new tires, but before I throw $1K after new rubber, I wanted bounce this off the brain trust.
Some facts:
Of the 40,000 miles I have put on it, 85% of the miles have been towing my trailer and track car (4,300 lbs. combined)
I had the dealer replace the driveline (center bearing failure @ 73,000) and drain, flush and fill all the driveline gear.
This is when the excess road noise got worse. I know the upgraded drive line for the Touareg/Cayenne has a heavier duty bearing, maybe transmitting more noise?
Is it possible that they skipped the flexplate alignment on either end?
Also, if I replaced the fluids with a heavier viscosity fluid that the noise would be reduced?
We just got back from Cape Cod and the wife said it was like driving with an outboard motor humming in the rear seat.
Thanks in advance.
Bill K

(after reading through my own question - looks like the mostly suspects are wheel bearings? - are these usually done on all 4 corners at once?)

No noise before, noise immediately after = not your problem. Take it back and tell them to make it right. I'd be suspect of a bad center bearing or imbalanced driveshaft.

Thanks Matt.
It's not like there was no noise before - I nursed that weak center bearing for about 2,000 miles before I had it replaced. (That sounded like I was riding on 2 flat tires.)
I cross-posted on Club Touareg and most there say if I replace the tires the noise will go away. Also, the pitch changes depending of road surface - blacktop/concrete.
Sort-of ruling out bearings, as noise stays the same during turns.

If you're planning on new tires anyway then I would go ahead and get those and then you could at least rule out the tires or not.

On my daily driver my tires were getting up there in mileage and due for replacement. I know all tires get noisy as they age but the noise I was hearing was loud. I was convinced I needed new bearings, it really sounded like much more than just the tires.

I finally ended up getting new tires on the daily and wow - like my car had a stealth feature they were so quiet.
