Cool story: Yogi was a "garbage hitter". He could pick up the ball so well he could hit almost anything inside or outside the strike zone. One time a pitcher threw one in the dirt in front of the plate. It bounced up and Yogi got a hit off of the bounce! Talk about good eyes and fast reflexes.

Yes, he could make contact on any pitch. One season, he had 600 at-bats and struck out 12 times. I'm guessing they were called third strikes on pitches that were outside the strike zone.

You're selling him short by using At Bats. It took over 650 Plate Appearances for him to accumulate those twelve strikeouts.

There are several major stars from the 1950's still with us- Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Whitey Ford, Frank Robinson, Orlando Cepeda... who am I forgetting?
Sandy Koufax began his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955.

I think Yogi and Ralph Kiner were the last major stars from the 1940's still with us.

The Associated Press Originally Reported that "Yogi Bear" Died at age 90

Well, this was bound to happen. News broke early this morning that Hall of Famer Yogi Berra passed away, and somehow the Associated Press published a one line article announcing the death of Hall of Fame pic-a-nic planner Yogi Bear. Both the headline and the article read: "New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Bear has died. He was 90."



Obviously this is wrong for several reasons, first and foremost being that Yogi Bear never played for the Yankees. The Yankees have never fielded a bear at any position, actually. Secondly, Yogi Bear is a cartoon character and therefore cannot die. And, finally, Yogi Bear debuted in 1958, making him just 57, not 90.
