When did carmakers start putting in flashing 3rd brake lights?

Not the ones I have seen. You'd need all your lights to flash, horn to sound, and fireworks to shoot our from your trunk. And then maybe they would look up from their phone

Yes, I should have said that flashing brake lights are intended to do that. I watch my rear-view mirror as much, if not more than looking ahead in traffic, especially in my 911. I'm sure most of us here do. Nothing like a big-rig (those guys text too) or an Escalade bearing down on you when the traffic suddenly slows.
