Why do power windows ALWAYS fail in the down position?

Always. First time. Sunroof. Opens silent and smooth. Poof! That's it. Some gears shear, rains coming. The bonus is always the rain.

Last night, wife calls again. Drivers side window motor grenades right after effortlessly lowering the glass. I had to make the pilgrimage to where she lives to drop off my truck and drive her Subaru back home so I can take it to the shop.

I bet I single handedly cure California's drought this weekend. . The window is down.

Ha ha. I wash my car about twice per year. When it gets so dirty I have trouble seeing out the windows. It always rains afterwards.

Only time I've had a window fail was on my Corrado, and I could literally see the storm cloud coming. Luckily I was close to my grandmas house so I rushed there and got it under the carport...


Hope you get the part quick Cliff. The corrado window regulator had to ship from Germany!

A lot of truth here. The weight of the window makes it easier on the motor going down than up so when the motor (or gears) are suffering they will usually fail when working the hardest.

On my work truck, the driver's side failed and until I have time to fix it - I took the door panel off, unbolted the drive, and stuck a manual handle on it so at least I can roll it up and down.

On my VW I pulled the door panel off and stuffed a board in there propping the window up.... the regulator in that was a cable drive. When it failed, there was no manual winding it!

Window motors going out is a somewhat common issue for the 350Z (just dealt with mine). Weird thing is they don't just "die." They start failing gradually. Window works just fine; then it works sometimes. Hit the door right where the motor resides, and it usually jars it back to life. I did this with mine for about a month before I got around to replacing it (2 days ago). It was annoying, but it's better than just dying outright. That happened to my Audi, and the Nissan was about a billion times easier to replace than the Audi.

In three of the cars I have owned that had power windows, the molded nylon/plastic/??? piece that supported the window glass and frame weight was what broke. Window glass can be heavy so down the window goes! The heaviest was the front windows in my wife's 2003 Caddy Deville and they weighed a bunch. The 1987 Porsche Turbo were lighter and the wipers on the glass fit a lot tighter so they sort of wiggled downwards.

The nice thing now is that ********.com sells the movement parts without that super expensive motor so it is an easy fix.

Get a Jeep Liberty. Their regulators always fail in the up position. Then after a couple of bumps, the window will end up in the down position.

The regulators strip when you put the window up. I think I've replaced them about 5-6 times in my daughter's liberty. I told her the last time to never put the windows down again. I considered disconnecting the switches.

car has a myriad of problems..i dropped it off with my buddy at the dealership.

best part of the day, after getting a MONSTER parking ticket during work. EFFEN OAKLAND..was my bike ride home. i put my road bike in the back of the car, and pedaled the hour long ride home.

it was kinda cool.

bad news? the head mechanic drove my car and said..WTF? your clutch pedal always that stiff? hahhaha.. whatever. what time is it? let me check!! oh well dont you know!! it's BEER THIRTY.

Not sure of failure cause. Rolled dice on regulator.
