Wanted: Record Lathe

I have a good friend looking for a Neumann record lathe if anybody knows of one available. He will pay top $ for a good one. A Scully is 2nd choice but still of interest. PM me if you know of one for sale. He will pay a finders fee.

Ian

I'd call/email Paul Gold in NY:

Salt Mastering
Salt Mastering - Mastering for CD and Vinyl - Brooklyn, NY

He should be able to point you/him in the right direction.

Well, I'm no help in your search, but I hope your friend has looked at it with a cold eye. I have had 3 records pressed in my day. One can get quite a lot of vinyl pressed by a third party for the cost of DIY. Even if he gets his hand on the lathe, where is going to get the experience to use it?

Too bad, I think that one is missing the microscope mount.

He has a good outside cutter that he hires on a needs basis but he wants to bring it inside. The problem is: with the rise of popularity of vinyl, everybody with a good machine is hanging on to it. I know where a number are & he knows about more but nothing is for sale. He does a lot of urban music, so the demand for vinyl releases is high. It didn't take long & I found another acquaintance who is also looking . . .

They're getting to be unicorns.

+1000

The cost of admission for a clean/working/calibrated 70 series Neumann is going to be north of $30k US (and probably another $20k US for an 80 series). A lot of them are going to need attention, and parts (many of which are hard to find/NLA).

Yep, and there are not many folks left that know how to service these machines either. The absolute guru to many on the subject of disc cutting was Al Grundy, but sadly he passed a few years back.
I think George Alexandrovich (sp?) is still around, but is also getting up there in years.

If your buddy is set on acquiring one (and I'd stick with a Neumann), try to get in touch with Mr. Gold.

Also, it probably couldn't hurt to throw up a WTB post on Lathetrolls, Gearslutz, and maybe Steve Hoffman's site as well.

Oh, and call Jeremy. Something tells me he may have an industry connection or two.

Good luck!

Thanks, Eric. Already having a PM conversation with Jeremy. One of my buddy's new hires is a cutter & he has been doing the deed for a while so that is covered. And yes, he knows the realistic street price for a good Neumann.

That one in Zimbawe? What could go wrong? But that is also a whole plant. Lathe, lacquer plating baths, 4 x stampers, pellet hopper etc. Probably not a bad investment for somebody but it is on the wrong continent.

Ian
