Wifey and Gall Bladder

Intense pain over the weekend. Went to the ER, a 1 cm. gall stone. They've admitted her and will evaluate blasting it, chemical dissolve or yank the Gall Bladder out. Morphine and she's resting comfortably. Will report back more tomorrow when I know more.

This may eff up our upcoming weekend trip in the Big Ass RV to Jalama State Beach.

Several years ago, my gall bladder started acting up. I'd have rapidly intensifying pain, vomiting, then more rocking, fetal pain. Had four of these episodes. Ultrasound showed two gallstones, one 2.5 cm. I looked into gallbladder removal. The consensus was that the side effects were not great, but not "nothing". Decreased ability to tolerate certain foods, some change in stool consistency were the most common. I ended up skipping the surgery, instead I started carefully avoiding eating significant amounts of fatty food quickly, and the attacks stopped. I also lost weight, about 15% of body mass, although I don't know if that had anything to do with the attacks stopping.

Anyway, most people I know who had repeated attacks eventually had their gall bladders removed, and they seemed pretty satisfied with that outcome.

Hope everything works out for her. From what I understand ultrasound is the best way to go.

Good thing you were not out of town when it got acute.

Mom used to have trouble eating greasy food, especially link sausage. She had one episode that laid her low for two or three days and did not abate. A lap choly later, she was right as rain. You definitely do not want your gall bladder to pop.

Been there done that, just get the thing removed. Took 2 hours on an outpatient thing...only thing is now pizza gives me stomach cramps.

I suffered for 3 years before my stubborn Dutch brain realized that while God had inserted the gall bladder into my body during gestation, the Devil now controlled it.

Yank that sucker out.....

Good luck.
My father in law just had his removed this weekend. He was experiencing sudden intense pain, went to the doc, and was admitted to the hospital where they took it out - it actually ruptured while they were in there.

He's doing fine now, but they kept him overnight to monitor for infections.

I hope everything works out well for your wife.

Keep in mind that repeated episodes or attacks can cause scar tissue to be laid down by each round. That scarring can make taking the thing out significantly more difficult and prone to complications. Also, stones in the gall bladder can turn into stones in the duct that empties into the gut which can require another procedure to address (ERCP). Lastly, all of this can result in the need for an "open" procedure which is best avoided if possible. We won't start to talk about costs.

If she has a lap chole today or tomorrow and everything goes well, she'll be discharged on post-op day 1 and you can still make your mini-vacation next weekend. Best wishes to Mrs R.

They got jammed, it was supposed to be 7PM tonight, now pushed to tomorrow morning sometime. Morphine is good. I'd get a pillow and sleep there on the floor, but they won't allow it. My God I love her, and I'd be a vegetable without her.
