Protecting wheels with a damaged clearcoat finish
I've put this in OT since the question pertains to one of my regular cars, not my 911. If this should better be put in the Technical section, let me know and I'll move it.
Doing a brake job on it this weekend reminded me that ny Accord has damaged clearcoat on a couple of the wheels. These wheels have a machined finish on the lip and spoke faces and paint in the recesses, with a clear coat over all of it. The clear coat has flaked off in places, and there is a little bit of durface corrosion from winter driving. (I don't drive a lot, even in winter, but it has seen a few winters of light use). This is not a car I am going to spend money to have the wheels refinished on, but I'd like to at least keep it from getting worse. How can I *effectively* either refinish or otherwise protect these exposed areas? I am not convinced that my cleaning and spot-refinishing the bad areas is going to last very long, but perhaps it's that or nothing. |

Go to lows and buy a spray can of plastidip
You can get clear, or you can get colours. You can take it off with a power washer if you get really aggressive, otherwise it holds up fine. My truck wheels were bad so I just scraped off the big flakes, and then hosed them down with black plastidip. I didn't even mask the tire. I just rubbed it off the tire after it dried. A year later another flake of the original finish pealed, so I just re sprayed the wheel and the plastidip blended back in. For our newer car, I spray the wheels clear plastidip for winter and remove it in the spring.

Perfect! I didn't know it was available in clear (I've never used the stuff). Thanks.
