Passion says Lotus, brain says Porsche.
How did you choose your wife? Looking for a fling, or a long term commitment?

If you don't know that's an Esprit, not an Elite, you probably should do a little more research then ask the question again...

951 all day long. Esprits are best viewed when owned by someone else.

You must really hate life. My last go with a 951 cured me of that itch. But the Lotus is another realm of hell entirely.

The Lotus is another car that deserves a thread called "How to cure happiness." lol

Everything I intended to say has already been said.
I got a used Jaguar to replace my 944 as daily driver as I needed something reliable. ![]() The Lotus, wasn't built to last. Chapman's philosphy was to a build a street car that would last just long enough that everything would break at once as soon as the car left the dealer lot. I looked at the Lotus Espirit's for a while, but you either get one at a premium in good condition, or spend a premium to attempt to bring a normal one to good condition. I couldn't find the former, and found lots of ways to potentially spend money with the latter. The 944 has its own set of issues, but will likely not be rotted apart. Budget aside, the Lotus is a very unique automobile. The 944 Turbo is not.

I would consider a 951... with a SBC conversion. ![]() Also FWIW I think you could score a super nice 951 for less than $15K (but I have not kept up on 951 prices.) YMMV

Friend used to have and esprit . It had the 2.2 turbo motor. He modded it out and it was crazy fun. I never liked it because it felt like a cheap kit car. Open the door and look at the hinges and you'll know what I mean.

A 944 Turbo is the utility daily driver. Love them. Sadly and other than 944 type owners, they get no respect. Easy to mod, track day hoot and piss-off 911 owners.
I've had very little time in a '91 Lotus Turbo Esprit. The early ones are basically 'refined' kit cars, though have some mystical way of twisting ones head backwards and wanting. Virtually no dealer network existed or got off the ground in the states. Good luck, pal. Getting back to a 1991. You couldn't give them away for the price they were and sitting next to a Porsche, let alone a Ford Mustang GT. But the little 4 banger put out good numbers, some vibes and has a cool sound. The Kevlar body was more attractive and gone were the sharp edges. Hardware was light, chincy junk, but the irony is accepting it as the Colin Chapman philosophy. So if you believe that, then what difference does it make? It just has to make the end of a race. In the case of a road going Esprit.... you got me on 'what the hell was Lotus thinking'. But, don't worry unless you're a big person trying to get into the vehicle, your knee accidently bumps the dash and it partially falls off. Hopefully some dangling loose wires will hold it up. Drive it like its meant to be.

those pictures in the OP tell the entire story.
either you want a car to cruise down the road on Sundays and stare at or you want a car that involves empty runways, shoe polish on windows and R comps.

The 6-7 years Ive been on lotus forums have taught me that esprits are really as bad as thier reputation.
I dont want it to be true, the forum participants are mostly in denial, but I think it is.

Neither?
It depends. If it is garage art and a run to the coffee shop on sundays? -> Lotus If it is a car you need to depend on for transportation and driving events -> Porsche G |
