78 911 sc or 04 996 A.E.
I never thought we would ever have 2 911's but it happened. Found a local 2004 996 Anniversary Edition for 19k with a lot of paper work....200 miles ago new clutch, water pump, air oil separator, battery, breaks, serp belt, thermostat, lube Mobil 1 with 80 k miles and is super clean. A solid "9.5" car that was at a new Jaguar dealer. The car was owned by a local Doctor. Tons of power and a great driving car we took on a 85 mile test drive. I spoke with the shop that did the maintenance for the Doctor and didn't know he was selling the car to get a Jaguar as they had known the car well and had no issues as it was well maintained. I know I paid well below market as I have been looking.
The SC is very nice Talbot yellow with Lobster interior showing 100 k miles, cold AC with heated seats and Targa top. an "8.5" car. great shine and no rust. We have owned it for 10 years with no issues. After driving the 996 there is no comparing these cars.... as the 996 has twice the H.P. The SC is out classed in ride quality and performance. The market is really HIGH for the air cooled cars right now.....Should I sell it as the stable is full with things that eat oil, tires and batteries. Neither 911 is a D.D. Yes I know the 996 is not Air Cooled .......Please don't hate me!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I have a boxster and an SC, both are top shelf condition and I see no need to get rid of either one. Comparing your SC to your 996 is apples and oranges.
You will regret selling the SC trust me. Read the posts of people here who have sold off an old 911 and they all say they would love to have the car back, except Paul.....

Apples and oranges indeed.
I used to own a 40th (#590). They are awesome cars. After that car and a fling with a 997 I decided air cooled is where I want to be. If you don't want both, think seriously about which car you will enjoy/use more. Can you imagine life without the SC? How about the 996? Let that drive your decision. |

Guess it depends on how you will be using the car, if you have to get rid of one. Daily driver or weekend fun car or track car? DIY maintainer (the SC is alot more friendly here obviously). But I agree w/ the others - keep 'em both if you can, they are both beautiful and all 911's are great cars (says the guy with the middie Targa

Very, very different cars. You say neither is a DD. So they are weekend toys? What is your most common use for them?
I love my Boxster, but I REALLY wish I had my old '88.

Keep both. That said your 996 is a dime a dozen Camry type Porsche but is much easier to live with as a DD. My Dad has an '03 996, it's nice, pretty quick I would not call it super fast, but very comfortable. Your SC looks like it could use some cosmetic work, still lots left to do on it to keep you busy.
You will look back and regret selling the SC. You probably won't regret selling the 996 unless you want a daily driver.

Sc versus 996. Sc all day long.
Coupe versus targa. Targa by far, no question. So for me easy decision. Plus Talbot yellow? Wow!!! Loose the tail and motor on!!

I love the old early whale tails, but I think I'd prefer one of the non-rubber ones so it would be mostly body color except for the grill and lip.
I don't regret selling my Carrera, at the time, it was the right thing to do. But I do regret that "at the time it was the right thing to do" and I do miss it dearly. It's unfortunate that the cost of one has gone through the roof.

Unless you have a pressing financial concern, I would keep both. You will regret selling the SC Targa. Ask me how I know

financially, keeping the SC probably makes better sense. it's going up in value quite quickly...

For investment potential - SC. For driving on any regular basis - 996.
Both fantastic cars. If you don't have to sell one, don't. The 40th AE is one of the more solidly valued 996s, while I don't see them going up in value I doubt they get any cheaper.

Well I guess either way you'll still have at least one air cooled flat 6 to play with.

Now in 993 land ...

You seem to think that the SC has a high price now - like it will come down soon. If that's your concern, I am certain that's not going to happen. I'd rather have an SC in the garage than additional cash in the bank at this point in time.

I agree but might take an extra $20K on top to get a nice one.

The 996 is one of the best buys of all the sports cars right now. Having owned both, if you just want short drive fun on the weekends, keep the SC. Otherwise, I'd sell it and keep the more capable 996.

Remind me never to ask for advice on the Internet. Holy balls.
Ten years ago, I'm sure some here would have told someone to sell their 1973 911S coupe, (a weekend driver), and buy a new 996 for $80k. Fuch me.
