San Diego Area: Right Coasters taking a trip. What To Do?
Polling the left coast brain trust for this one.
In laws will be in San Diego area for a week in May, we (the kids) would like to collectively gift them, for Christmas, something to do while they're there. Prolem is we're not well traveled and have no idea where to start. What is fun, different, entertaining for 2 semi-athlietic early 50 y/os who like to eat, drink, golf and go on adventures? Thanks Sauce ![]()

Balboa Park would be a good start. You can get tickets online.

There used to be a nice "old town/gas light" district in San Diego with bars and restaurants that was reasonably safe to walk (or short cab trips) that we enjoyed when we were there.
If I were there a week and had not been there before, I would take a day and rent a car and drive north to see the Hollywood sign, Hollywood Blvd, etc. See some of the famous beaches that we see on TV (I like to park and jog the path along the beach and see the volleyball players, ocean, etc. (not sure which one (maybe Manhattan Beach...all are nice and parking is usually free). Maybe drive around in Beverly Hills/90210. My wife enjoyed that the first time we went to CA Seems like we also went to a nice SeaWorld or similar in San Diego.

There is (was?) a really neat hang glider port you could go where you could watch the hang gliders take off. It was just south of the Torrey Pines golf course as I remember. It is on the top of some cliffs and there is a small eatery there to get sandwiches, etc. Great to go for lunch for a while and gaze out over the sea. Then they can go golfing at Torrey Pines
![]() The San Diego Harbor is a nice place to spend some time also. Craig

Golf:
Torrey pines....north if the south course is too high for the budget Carmel Mountain Ranch....easier on the finances. Old town is great, Mexico is just a hop, skip and a jump away, I like the Midway aircraft carrier, the San Diego wild animal park....

Agree with Old Town and Coronado for sure.
Can take the train from downtown to the Mexican border, walk across and then a short cab into Tijuana if that interests them. Beaches, shops and restaurants in La Jolla north of SD are worth doing. If renting a car, a day drive east up thru Julian and up to the observatory/State Park at Palomar Mountain are worth doing.

Active adventures:
Kayak tour of La Jolla Cove, rent bikes and cruise the boardwalk or trek up the coast all the way to Carlsbad. Rent a sail boat and do a 3 hour SD harbor sail. With car access a trip to Anza Borrego desert is pretty amazing if you have never been there. I can no longer recommend TJ thanks to south of the border crime waves and police on the take. http://www.sandiego.org/what-to-do/sports/biking.aspx https://bikeandkayaktours.com/kayak-tours/kayak-la-jolla/ http://www.desertusa.com/anza_borrego/du-abpmain.html
