Still no love for Pete Rose
So does he still deserve to have his punishment continue for his gambling problem? I say enough. 1989 was a long time ago and compared to the steroid users...well I say enough.

I'm not well versed in that situation, but I *believe* he never admitted or apologized for betting on baseball. I think that's holding him up.

He knew what he was doing, and the penalty for getting caught. His achievements are what they are, and he deserves his spot in the Hall, after he dies.

1989 was a long time ago? How about 1919 and the hand dealt to Joe Jackson? If "enough is enough," let it start with someone else other than Pete Rose.

Don't follow Baseball, BUT:
Pete Rose and Mario Andretti used to own this DP935........I recall when Jeff Grant paid $55,000 US and when the recession hit, was begging to get $30,000 Canadian for it: DP 935 For Sale Wonder what it would sell for today? Isn't $30K Canadian like Low $20's US now?

F-him, no baseball and no hall of fame FOR LIFE just like they said.
He bet on games he played in, he bet on games he was a coach in. He bet on games that he could influence or control the outcome, and that is the ultimate sin in sports. The worst of the worst. Then, in my book he didn't even worse than that! THE POS LIED ABOUT IT. He denied it over and over and over, he looked in the camera and lied about it to our faces, time and again. Only to come clean after decades and admit that he is stinking dirty dog crap. If it were up to me his name would be stricken from every form of media and his descendants for the next thousand years would be banned from the game too. |

Frankly, I was surprised to see him as an analyst on TV this past season.
As for the steroid users, I don't think they should have any standing records in the books, but that's just me.

Rose committed the worst sin possible. He bet on games as a player and manager. He bet on his own team. And he got in over his head and was in hot water with his bookie. Then he bet more on his own team.
Steroid users are a threat to the game to, but at least with them you know they were trying to perform their best. Gamblers are a risk to the game because you don't know that they're trying their best and they have a strong temptation to fix outcomes. That's why gambling is a bigger sin than steroids.

Lets us ask the same question to "shoeless Joe Jackson". 1919 White Sox. What would he say?.

Yes he did bet on games he played in.....to win ! It's not like he ever was able to throw a game and lose on purpose, and profit from losing ! How do you guys feel about Daryl Strawberry, or some of the steroids guys like Mark McGuire, who lied no end about thier cheating. |

If he bet his team would LOSE, it's obvious that's unethical, however, can someone explain the "logic" that shows why betting that your team will WIN can affect the game in any meaningful way? The entire thing never made sense to me.

Rose comes across as unlikable as a guy you're going to meet, something that costs him a tremendous amount of public support.
Anyone old enough to have watched him play knows he's one of the top 20 players of all time, a level of excellence he reached through a fair amount of talent and unmatched preparation and in-game effort - hence his well-earned nickname. If he'd ever bet against one of his teams I'd support his ban, but he clearly didn't, always betting on his team to win. It's a disservice to real baseball fans of all ages that he's not in the HOF. _

I'm with Sammy on this one, he's a POS in my book and I can't stand the guy. He walked on to the lot at the Porsche dealer I was working at a few decades ago and I just turned on my heels and walked away from him.

I was walking through Cesar's Forum Shops in Vegas once and saw Pete Rose sitting at a table in the sports memorabilia shop. He was there to sign autographs and there were no takers. This was about four yrs. ago.

I'm all for the lifetime ban. He lied about it then he started lying about lying about it.
You don't think MLB didn't try and come to some kind of "accommodation" with one of its fan favorites? I'm sure their lawyers and his lawyers/him had a sit-down to explained some of the cards they were holding. You don't think MLB didnt offer him some kind of suspension if he would admit he had a problem and then spend the next 6 months in rehab and all would be forgotten??!! I know the bookie kept records but I have a really hard time believing Rose only bet the lines and it was always for the Reds to win????!!!! Even when he has access to whats going on in the clubhouse(good, bad or indifferent) he still only bet to win? That's quite the stretch in my mind |
