The affordable 356 thread

I double dog dare you!

I'm pretty much of the opinion that the only affordable 356 is a replica at this point.

Where is a good place to take the pulse of the 356 market?
In the 42 years I've owned them my 356s have morphed from transportation and hobby to part of my retirement portfolio, but I haven't kept a close watch on their value.

Obviously the Janis Joplin thread got me thinking...

On a quick search I found this:

!!!64 Porsche 356 Coupe | 1964 Porsche 356 Model Classic Car in Moundridge KS | 4081928841 | Used Cars on Oodle Marketplace

On the other hand on that same page there were 356's in the $100K range, also obviously just like the 911 there are a lot of different makes/models/years and some are much more collectable than others.

Scott.....if you could get this car for the asking price of $17,600.00 it would be the steal of the century.

Especially if it lived up to the description in the ad.

My gut feeling is something is fishy in Denmark!

saw one for 25k that had more bondo then original sheet metal a few years ago

a carbon fiber 356 could be done as re-pop cheaper then most today
maybe with a subie turbo but where to stick the radiator ?

Yeah, shopping around there are local shops that will build you a 356 in the $25K range.

I would be cool with a fiberglass 356 coupe on a tube frame, disk brakes, 2.4 or 2.7 air cooled six.

Of course the smart money is to buy a replica slightly used and let someone else pay the new car tax.

My neighbor has a replica 356 cab. It's a great looking car, but not my cup of tea.

For the naysayers thinking the Long Hood market will "top out", I say: Look at the history of 356 prices......

I missed the 356 boat about 8 years ago when an old guy I knew donated a very decent driver to his local small town charity to auction off.......The charity was very happy with the $11,000 they got.....

A good friend of mine just sold his 356 roadster for low six figures, the guy who bought it is trying to flip it for $40K more than it was just bought for...

Yep, that is why I am more settled on just a replica... no worrying about bondo and body rust or ancient mechanicals that need constant maintenance.

I don't do car shows or join clubs I just need a fun little runner for the weekend and trips to the market.

Never drive it tho. Thought about selling it, but wouldn't want to pay the reacquisition price if I wanted another.

Did that once. Weird problem, too valuable to sell.

That's why I moved to Alfa's. But they'll probably end up in the same boat.

That is exactly the body I want! Except mine will be fiberglass, I can't/won't get a real one because I want/need a driver.

It is a driver more or less, but it is a pain to play car roulette and get it off the lift for a quick jaunt.

Probably use it a bit more if I had a tandem garage. Not worried about the value really, chips are a part of life, and insurane is plentiful. :-)

I wanted to kick myself in the butt several years ago, when I realized what I missed out on. In 1992, I noticed an ad in the paper for two 356's for $20K. I called for info as one was described as a '63 coupe without a trans & engine. At that time I was thinking I'd like one for a project. Went to look at the cars The other car was a '59 convertible. Both were in good shape & the convertible had a running engine that had been rebuilt & came with the original engine that was worn and needed rebuilding. They were stored in a large shed behind the guy's house. I was only interested in the coupe as a project, but the guy wanted to sell the two cars together. I wasn't able to just buy just the coupe & wasn't interested in having & storing both cars so I left. Some years later I was looking in Excellence at the going rate for the '59, & that's when I realized what I'd done.
