Parents of young kids..HELP, need snow gift ideas.
i'm going to the mountains this weekend. Lake Tahoe.
me, i'm stoked. i bought new tires, new wiper blades..really interested to see if my Michelin LTX AT-2 do well in snow. but i digress. just got the word that other couples are going, and one pair has kids. these are my God-kids so i need to rally and buy some cool gifts. i'll start a new booze thread on how to medicate myself to get ready to be cooped up with kids..but again..digress. i think SNOW TOYS. something they can open now and play with. any ideas? wife just poo-pood my snow sling shot idea..so i am drawing a blank. helmets and sleds? kids are 5 and 2. (if that helps) wife thinks tiny puffy jackets and gloves.. ZZZZZZZZ! for you 8 years and older guys..look at this ![]() ![]()

The slingshot looks like a toy for the dads!
![]() If they don't have sleds get some of those! Even the cheap little plastic disc ones are fun! And helmets? What kind of sissy ass kids are these? We never wore a helmet sledding... Behind atvs! |

I know this is a horrible gift idea... and a really bad from a safety stand point...
But the most fun I had as a kid in the snow was ridding those huge inner tubes. Most important thing it to find a huge slope with no trees!!!! Don't know I survived without a helmet and no pads... and just blue jeans and long underwear... Edit to add, 10-4 on the inner tube = concussion

You cant go wrong with snow tubes. There were some kind of snow molds for building igloos and snow forts too.

Re: Safety of inner tubes, someone had one of those old wood toboggans... not that thing was scary as all heck... I'll take an inner tube over one of those any day.

I really like the long molded plastic sleds with the pull handle and rope. for going down snowy hills, and maybe a coupla beach sand buckets for building forts. We would tie the sleds in succesion behind the ATV, and give several kids a wild ride at once. The coolest by far was when we got out our boating kneeboard on the ice with the long water skiing rope behind the ATV, I bet in the turns we hit 40 mph

Saucers or sleds. Don't know if the kids have jackets or gloves, but snow boots make it a lot more pleasureable to stay out in the cold and play. You can probably find some cheapies in Tahoe.
In Frazier Park, when the "flatlanders" would come up for snow play, kids were always crying after 15 minutes because the shopping bags inside their tennis shoes just didn't provide proper insulation.

I love Frazier park. My friends mom had a great home there. Then she "didn't" I didn't ask. Sigh. I used to buy a quarter of a cow there.

At those ages, the sleds would probably do well but I think for the 5year old have smores materials ready for when they come in. And hot chocolate with marshmallows.

The 5 year old (boy?) would love that sling shot. They will just have fun throwing snow around or if they are kept warm enough, they will build stuff out of snow. I think the igloo block maker is a great idea. Not sure about the 2 year old. They can go out fall all over the snow and still have loads of fun.
Hey, I have the same tires on my 4 runner. Tell me how they perform. I am going up to Yosemite in two weeks. Last edited by look 171; 12-17-2015 at 07:59 AM.. |

How about some of that special "sled wax" that Clark Griswald uses.

Get them a couple of these: http://www.amazon.com/Paricon-Flying-Carpet-Sled/dp/B004GF150Y/ref=pd_sim_468_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=31zsQlFBmqL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1MC74N7AMB1757GHC6VQ
They used to be about $2. The kids can haul them up the slope without to much problems.

Bring some surgical tubing and a large plastic funnel. Show them how to make a funnelator. Fun for the whole family. The best part about having kids is the free pass to be one again.
As a parent, this has the added benefit of being small to carry. Consider that anything you bring up there for the kids, the parents have to haul away with them. Just the fact that you are thinking of them and willing to go play with them in the snow, will ensure they remember this trip for a long time.
