"Son it is a Porsche, rich people drive those"

Fast fwd, I am blessed with the ability to own one.
I think the parent missed a teachable moment. What say you?

Maybe so but it may well been ignorance on mom's part.

I bought my 911 20 years ago. More than a few times over the years some friend or acquaintance would give me a hard time about driving a "rich mans toy." or some such. On most occasions they were driving a $40K SUV or pickup high end sedan that cost twice or three times what I paid for my 911.

Ask them what their household debt is. Credit cards, auto loans, mortgage, etc. That usually shuts them up.

Not at all.

What makes you say that and what do you propose she should have "taught" him?

I hear this all the time; imagine what they say when I tell them I own"3". They shut up when I ask them how much their new car cost and then tell them how much I paid for all three; much less than their one. Who's rich now?????

I used to do that when I was little, pointing out new cars that I liked.

My dad always replied "work hard and you'll be able to get one."

Actually, the teachable moment was well learned by Berk. Make something of yourself and you can have things like that Porsche. The fact that he ever forgot the comment tells the whole story.

I get some grief at work about my "rich man's car", until I calmly tell them that the 5 vehicles I have at home don't match the price of thier new Honda minivans......and I don't have any payments either. That seems to shut their pieholes pretty quickly.

Are you crazy? Didn't you learn anything from the Occupy Wall Street movement? The world owes me. I shouldn't have to pay my dues. Lazy Lives Matters.

Well, let's be honest, a $25-30K 911 is MUCH harder to buy than a $25-30K Honda Accord, because only one of those can you go down the street and get a loan with $2000 down.

It is hard (and getting harder!) to manage to collect the cash needed to buy a vintage 911. Get the cash, hold the cash for months or more, wait for the right car, then risk the cash because you have no warranty or buyers rights.

Not necessarily, I bought my car with a loan from the local credit union. They had no concerns over the age of the car. All they wanted was to make sure the VIN matched and the car ran under its own power. Loans up to trade-in value for older cars are very simple to get from a credit union. YMMV.

At any rate, I am happy for the OP to now have the car of his dreams since he was a child.

It was pretty hard in 1995 as well to find the "perfect" car. I paid 20K for my 911 back then and with inflation alone that is $31,146 today. And no, it ain't for sale!

It took me many months of looking to find my car.

Interesting. I didn't do an extensive search, but when I was looking, pretty much anything more than 10-15 years old was verboten from the various loan places I looked.

So, I guess 911s are the everyman car

Funny thing was, I used to point out Sentras and Mercedes Benzes (I liked those early 90s taillights). Hahaha. Little did I know, I wouldn't want those when I got older.

They did look super modern when seen from my dad's '64 Beetle.

We've all had those conversations where our "rich mans car" was a $15-20K 911SC that cost half of the accuser's Lexus/BMW/Accord!!!

But we're soon losing that line of defense. At current prices for aircooled cars, they're truly becoming a rich man's toy again, even if you bought it for cheap. If you lucked into a long hood 911, you could probably trade straight for a slightly used Ferrari Italia ! Not that you should, but just sayin'!

FIY, a guy just bought my mint 68 912 with a partial loan from a specialist... Those exist ! Admittedly that was NOT as easy as buying a new accord, he had to do an inspection of my car via a dedicated service (not a PPI), more paperwork etc.. but it worked out within 7 days and I got a check straight from them! I can look up the service if anyone cares.

I don't get that a lot. But I guess I am the poorest man in the neighborhood.

For the record, I won't be able to buy my car now at these insane prices. I was lucky I had some cash when they were selling below $20k.

You're like me, probably kicking ourselves for not picking up a spare, one of the rough ones that was going for $7k or so. The only reason I didn't was "because I didn't have any garage space for a dead 911"...

Hindsight says that it would have been completely worth it to pay for storage with this market! That "dead" 911SC in 2008 would be a $20k+ car now, even with just a few weekends of worth to get it running and maybe look over the suspension and brakes...
