My new winter rig - '88 Toyota Hilux diesel

I picked up this gem a few weeks ago. Needed something to get me to and from work during the winter, and went for a solid overkill. I've loved these pickups since childhood.

It's got 438 000 km on the clock, but the 2.4 diesel engine is from a newer model, with unknown mileage. Solid front axle, 33x12,5 BFG AT on the summer wheels, 33x12,5 studded General Grabber AT2 on it right now. It also has an Old Mane Emu lift kit.

No pictures, which is a shame because I love those trucks. Pity we get the watered down gasoline only Tacoma.

I want that. Is it a turbo diesel or NA? Fast or slow? How many mpg?

Either way, I want one. How many krugerrands, (or whatever your currency is called), did it cost? How much is gas in Norway? Nice rig!

Nice score......I'm jealous.......Toyota could have sold me a bunch of Diesel P/U's over the years if they would have imported to the US. Guess they were smarter than me.

Cool truck. I've driven a few US ga versions of that truck, or at least as close as we got and really liked them. Honestly also quite low on power, not quite 240d but not far off at least when you have any sort of load in the bed.

I would love one for hauling the bikes and camping hear out to the mountains.

that is sweet!!

you should get special license plates that say "FU USA"
they used a similar vehicle as the emergency backup truck on top gear when they tried to take those trucks up to the end of the earth or something. it was unstoppable.

to say i want a modern version would be an understatement. i saw so many of those things in El Paso over Tday week..every one of them had mexico plates. it was cool to hear the tiny diesel motors. they look very anemic in modern trim, but nothing a few aftermarket bolt on parts couldnt fix. and a 3" lift.

Well, that's one more Hilux not falling into the hands of ISIS/ISIL.

Nice ride.

That's a really clean truck.

I had two 1985s like that with the solid front axles. By 86, they were all ISF suspension. That's a pretty big diesel motor in there? All we got was the lil' 4 banger gas engine. Still a really good motor. I really want that truck back.

How's the heater with the diesel? With my Toyota gas engine truck like yours at 0 degrees F the heater would blow cold air. That sucked during a winter up north with 30-40 mornings of 0 F or colder. Syn oil in the trans/diff/xcase made a huge difference at those temperatures.

That strange. I always had great heat in both my 85s. I drove into Canada right through the Rockies during Christmas with it and the heat was plenty. I did have to cover part of my radiator with cardboard and some zip ties. a trick I learned on the road once we crossed into Canada.

Awesome - I wish we could get that as a diesel in the US. Looks very nice considering you are in the rust belt!

Thanks, guys!

I'm very happy with it. The diesel is very sluggish, especially with the big wheels (no turbo). When driving it home on the highway, with the bed full of wheels, I had to drop down to third when the hills got long. But it's quite frugal. Gas prices varies from 12.50 NOK to 15 NOK per liter spending of weekday and oil prices. (1 USD = 8.75 NOK), diesel is between 10.50-14 NOK per liter.

The truck uses well under a liter per 10 kilometers. You have to do the math yourselves to get the MPG... :-) I gave 50k NOK for it, which is about 5700 USD. Quite a lot, but it has the lift I wanted and two sets of 33s. Also, these trucks are very popular up here, so the good ones demand a premium. On a side note, a new VW Golf costs about 34k USD up here. But then again, our salaries are higher than yours. I digress...

What will I use it for? Well, my commute is just 6-7 minutes in urban environment, so I really don't NEED it, in fact, a small saloon or a compact would make more sense, but this is what I wanted, dammit! A pure indulgence (as if an old 911 isn't an indulgence enough, people might say).

Heat in the cabin is good enough. But there isn't much of a winter this year, even up here in Norway, so I really don't know how it will be when (if) it gets really cold.

Plans for it? I'm making a subwoofer box for it to have behind the seats right now, and I want to add a light bar on the bumper. Also, I've always had a thing for KC Daylighters with the smiley on the yellow covers, so maybe four of those on the roll bar?
