Rigged up a camping shower.

Heading to the AZ desert for about 8-9 days of hiking and camping. Carrying my bow for "close encounters". The old shower which was just a gallon jug with a knife hole in the lid wasn't cutting the funk. Hard to throw water "up" if you know what I mean.

50/50 freezing water and boiling water is a good mix for a hot shower. Found a sprayer for $14 plus a $7 off coupon and I built this thing for thirty two dollars. It works pretty well. Just a few pumps. I bet it flies if I really pump it Even my wife was surprised.

Not bad. I always use a backpacking shower - one of those 2.5 gal. plastic bags with the black colored back and clear front that you can fill, lay out in the sun & it warms using insolation. I put it down on a sleeping pad for insulation while it heats up. You could also put warm water in it to start with or to use. You probably already know about them. You can get them at outdoor/camping stores. I like them because they can be used to heat up to almost 100 degrees on a normal sunny day and can be rolled up for storage.

Isn't that what a Hilton Hotel is for?

Yes, Hugh.

But the room that comes with vash' contraption can come from no hotel.

You paint that sucker matt black or even black plasti-dip it and you got yourself a warm shower.

Good rig cliff. Dump plenty of warm water in though. It's cold in the desert right now!

My fellow backpackers all laughed at me when I pulled that contraption out of my backpack.

But it didn't take long for them to start asking to borrow it.

I like it. I always heated the water and put it in a bucket with a foot button operated battery powered pump. This is better.

Clif. Another thing I used to use for a shower was a 15 gallon grease drum with a shower head and valve in the bottom bung. This was my shower at back country Ranger stations. It had two ridges around the drum spaced at 5 gallon intervals. I used to keep standing water up to the first ring, and pour a big bucket of hot water in up to the second ring. Turned it on & the temperature was perfect. You could use something like that and get by with a lot less than 15 gallons of capacity.

I even found a picture of one from '74. You can see the drum up on the top.

I bought a discount weed sprayer to build a brake bleeder a few years ago... Used it for the first time to spray densifier on my new shop floor.

What you built here is pretty cool.

In Siberia, I was shown his to wash your hands with a water bottle. You slightly crack the lid and squeeze the bottle. It sprinkles out on one hand and then you switch.

What were you doing out there? I love to hear how these guys survive with very simple things in that environment. Got stories to share?

I am a wuss, I have always used a store bought solar shower when I camp. For backpacking, we normally just jump into a pond, lake or stream. Freaking cold, but the big bonfire will eventually warm our ass up after some time.

Awesome idea Cliff! One of my 2016 goals is to get my kids out and do some camping this year.
