So.....what are you thinking about? At least tell us what model vehicle. I'm in the midst of a tribute that I will letter up period correct with my 911.
I'd love to do a Hurtz gt350 mustang or even a Sunoco early camaro. Or a BRE 510 Or 240z. I'd do a martini rally livery if my 911 was white. Or a Brumos theme.

914,just like in my photo above. I dont know why, but I love that car ... The sunoco penske camaro has always been on my short list as well. But I already have a yellow 914 begging for some big flares, 8x15 fuchs, and some decals .

Go for it....I think that would be cool. Numbers and all...period correct. Harkens cback to my early days of SCCA road racing hwhen many people drove their cars to the track loaded with spares and camping gear. IIRC Prentice used to drive a 58 MGA TO ROAD ATLANTA and had podium finishes at the runoffs

If you're going to actually put it on the track, not cheesey at all. They aren't making any more vintage race cars and I can understand not wanting to race some of the originals.

Driving around the neighborhood with numbers on your car = cheesey, although I know a guy who does it from time to time.

I haven't raced my Miata since I broke my arm a few years ago, but it is still all decked out for SSM. You should have things around you that remind you that life is actually fun.

Have some fun with this.

I was out of line posting General Lee. To try and apologize, here are three cars that I would absolutely drive as street-legal clones:

You should probably get the latest issue of Road & Track. They track the '68 Penske Camaro...

Most adults don't know anything about vintage or current race cars so the opinion of most adults is not relevant.

I used to be into building cars.....but "clones" were not my personal choice. I have always thought that building hot rods were your "personal " milieu not someone's else's no matter how cool. IMO, clones are a cop out.

Sure, it's tough to be "original".....but you can try.

The 914 above your original post looks period correct and the 914 is a real car that has been raced for 45 years.
A version of it (914/6GT) even beat the 911s at the 1970 Lemans

Fred it's your car and I think they can be done in good taste.

Interesting to hear all your opinions. Thanks ! I really love that old datsun, and JP, your first iteration of your 914 is so cool, I just may clone it... j.k
I have always wanted to do this. I had planned on doing it to a 911 , but now I have this 914, and it would be the perfect candidate for it .
I most likely will end up racing this car anyhow, at least an occasional auto cross, but I would really like to take a few hill climbs, and maybe even later on, even moving into vintage as in my other thread .
I could realistically do the whole shebang in vinyl , and just peel it off if I get sick of it . I am definitely going to gt flares and big fuchs no matter what .
I started to play around a little last night

Whoa, wait a second, are you sure that's not a real 917?!
