Best Chronograph on the planet for your bucks

Just purchased another Omega Speedmaster Professional moon watch, this one is about
twenty years old,.The first owned by my Dad is to valuable as it is seventies 321 movement, never used it.But this one i will be using , although cost $2000 to
$8000 depending on condition ,year, specs.Fabulous they are 48 hour mechanical wind
,42mm dia,has the unbreakable 861 or 1861 movement,and have the famous Tachymetre, so you can time your Porsche 911 quarter mile .Very interesting when
they tested all the makes back on the man on the moon,Omega was the only watch to
pass all tests,the same manual wind you can still buy today. These a bit like our older 911s going up in value every year. My latest gains 1 second a day. My advise if you buy one spend from $2500 to $3000, you will never loose your money.

Yep. Mine has been my every-day watch for more than 30 years. Its gotten tired but after some effort and several tries at a decent rebuild, the things keeps great time - a gain of just a second or two per day.

Nice, collectable watch, but hardly the "Best Chronograph on the planet for your bucks." A $20.00 Timex digital keeps better time.

My iPhone has a stop watch. Works fine for when I need it. Which is maybe once a year.

I think it depends a lot on function. I have a $200 Casio G-Shock that's supposed to be unbreakable. It updates time by radio (I believe tiny unicorns enter through a radio antenna and set the watch to the correct time every night), so it's also exactly right, period, never loses time. The face is a solar cell, so it charges itself. No winding, no battery changing, ever. Theoretically, this watch will last essentially forever.

If it's about durability, longevity, and accuracy, you can save an order of magnitude and do even better on all fronts. If it's about wearing a classic piece of history, well ... get the Omega.

My jeweler laughed when I told him the exact same thing.
I sent my 45 yr. old Rolex out for regular service, and I wore my battery powered Timex round while the Rolex was being serviced. (I normally have to reset the Timex about once every 3-4 years to sync it with the cable boxes - so it keeps very good time.)
So I get the Rolex back and its still losing 3-4 minutes a month.
Return to jeweler to discuss and he says that's normal for my model of selfwinding chronometer. Apparently the changes in temperature affect the expansion and contraction of the works and 2-3 seconds a day is normal. Then he showed me a Breitling that is guaranteed to within 2-3 seconds per year, and out of my tax bracket.

I have a Casio Toughman with the titanium back and band. It sets itself each night, solar power and good to 100 meters which is 99 meters deeper than I need.

It has tons of other features I don't use very often.

That Omega is really cool, but I really don't see it as going up a lot in value. I suspect it is like many things that I just don't see the millennials or their kids getting into old watches.

I have my dad's Bulova Astronaut watch that I wear about once or twice per year. That is the only watch I want and only because my dad wore it a lot.

Agree with those who see little practical value in an analog chrono. A complication best relegated to more modern technology (cell phone). I love and own two manual wind watches, a Panerai and a Nomos, but both are minimalist designs that basically do two things...tell the time and look cool. Speedy is a classic but they made (and continue to make) them by the zillions, so don't bet your retirement savings on their appreciation.

Owning a Omega is on my bucket list...

But at work I have the G-shock atomic solar mentioned above (and paid $100 )

For Christmas my wife had this rebuilt/refurbished for me:



Bought off eBay for $160, kept crapy time so sat in a drawer for 10 years, wife spent $225 to refurbish, works great.
They are now selling for $800-$1000 on eBay

This is on my wrist for the trip. And only because the band on my 9 year old Patfinder is tearing.

Saying that any watch is "the best" is like saying, "Blue is the best color." "My personal favorite" would be less inflammatory.

My thinking is that the best watch is going to mean most accurate. I'll put my solar atomic G Shocks against any mechanical watch for accuracy. They're 100% accurate year after year.

Another measure of "best" might be value. While not atomic, I'm thrilled that for $100, I can buy a watch that is solar powered, has a digital compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer, alarms, chronograph...
