Why are my pictures upside down
Why are my pics coming out upside down when I download off my iPad.
![]() Ok on my iPad they show up looking right side up but if I look on my MacBook there upside down. This has only been happening since my last update. Does this have something to do with the cloud??? Thank for any help

I don't know the answer, but the issue is rampant when it comes to iphones and ipads (essentially anything running iOS).

Obviously it has to do with devices orientation.
Holding the device so the lens is in the upper left corner should eliminate it. When you rotate the device there are two ways to get compensation. 1) The device processes the image to the correct orientation relative to the device 2) Tag the EFIX data with orientation info Apple uses option 2 because option 1 requires more from the device which means the camera is not available for the next shot as fast and it also decreases battery life. The problem with option 2 is lazy developers that don't account for reading EFIX data so photos can be presented in the proper orientation. You can get a 3rd party camera app which will process using option 1. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/camera+/id329670577?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D8

Ok here's what's strange. I take the picture with iPhone it is than sent to the cloud where my MacBook and iPads pick it up. So why does the Mac get it right but the iPads get it wrong? Is there a setting on the iPads that is wrong? Do I need to download that app on the iPads? If I email the pics.from the Mac I can retrieve them right side up on all devices.

As far as I can tell this started happening not long after HDR picture capability appeared on the iPhone. Try turning that feature on and off and see if it makes any difference when you move the picture to another device.

It's the EXIF data.
Images are tagged with degrees of rotation relative to the cameras horizontal, 90, 180, 270..... Some software will read the data and compensate for the rotation. Go here, exifdata.com Right click the first image in this thread and copy the image address, paste and submit. Open another browser window / tab and go back to exifdata.com, now right click and get image address from the 3rd pic and submit it. The differences in the data are "Software" right in the middle of the list and "Orientation", last item. You'll see that Quicktime on the Mac compensated for the rotation.

if it's just for PPOT i do a screen shot and flip it when that happens.
If i try to upload a photo to PPOT that was originally saved as a RAW file i have to do the same. The Pelican chokes on the EXIF data.

Post it to a website that hosts pics then link it back to Pelican.

The problem is that you can hold phones and pads in every rotation taing the pic. The device itself knows how you took the pic and shows it correct. But when it leaves the device the other end does not have that info or does not read it.

For most of the photos I post on Pelican I save them to my computer. The thumbnail is correct but if I open it in Photoshop the image is upside down. I almost always want to crop the photo or tweak the exposure or something. When I rotate it and save it that version will post correctly. That photo also as the location where it was taken. In Win7 or later you can right click on the image and under properties see the info and delete the geo-tag or other personal information. I do that images I shoot at home.

GH I do use the volume button to take pictures will try with it on the bottom. Funny I rotated a picture yesterday on my iPad so it was upside down in my album. When I tried to upload it it still came out wrong. Are you suppose to rotate it a full 360*? Also I never had this problem till the last update. Phones a 5s just don't like the 6 it's to big. I'm guessing these new updates are not good for the older phones or iPads. Thanks for all the info.

There is no mystery here.
It's not the hardware. The device, like every other one, has a base horizontal. Apple decided using tagged data vs in device processing was a better option for performance and battery life. Shooting with the lens in the upper left corner is base horizontal. If you rotate from there and don't post process before posting it may or may not show up the way you want depending on where you post it. But that's the fault of the destination not honoring the embedded data that tells it how to display it the way you want.
