I would go 4k, it looks like it will be here soon. Lots of sports shows are switching over now.

I LOVE my Panasonic AX800. 4k. 65" I use it as a PC monitor. It's one of the very few TV's that has a Displayport input.
The only thing I don't like about it is the weight. It's a heavy SOB.

to me they have become a commodity, and quality differences only seem to matter when viewed side by side inside the store. Once you get them home they all look great at this point in history.
I just go to costco and shop on size and price. They don't seem to carry any junk.

Buying from Costco gets you either an extra 2 or 3 years on top of the existing warranty.
Used to be when I bought last - 4 yrs. ago. And the Costco staff will tell you of upcoming sales.

Here Costco is worth it because they double the warranty up front.
Their extended warranty is OK as well, as it's on top of the standard warranty, not part of it, giving you 5 years on a manufacturer's 1 year warranty. I always used to say an extended warranty was a money grab, but electronics suck so bad these days it often worth it.

It was a joke. So wtf right back at ya there tough guy.
4K in the 50 to 60" size range is for rubes and suckers. Hell, 4K for 99% of home use is stupid marketing BS. How big is your screen and how far away do you sit. |

I bought a Samsung 55" LED because it was on sale at Christmas. I've been very pleased with the picture. I've found you really need to research what your buying because the same model varies from store to store regarding specs.

Why do you need a TV at all, seriously? I have a several-year-old LCD 55" flat panel that still looks and works great. It might get two hours of use a week - possibly a couple more with kids, video games, etc. factored in. I've actually been using it more to tie my MacBook into so I can sit on the couch across the room and work than anything else. When it dies I doubt I'll replace it - certainly not with anything so big or prominent. I never liked the idea of a gigantic idiot box being given the place of honor in every living room in America anyway (mine isn't BTW, but for most people the entire living room is designed around the TV). A couple of "tie-into when needed" screens off to the side for video gaming or occasional movie viewing for content that's not on a tablet or laptop would be fine.
I really do think the best TV is "no TV" or "limited TV". I truly hate the medium of television - it has done more to mentally impoverish us as a society than any other device in human history - Internet included. I'll be glad when network television finally dies off as an institution - the current on-demand / streaming revolution is an improvement somewhat but it's too little too late. I'm hoping a few of the networks (and carriers) collapse in the years to come. It wouldn't be a bad thing at all. There are a few good programs / shows out there worth watching but for every one that is, there are 5,000 that are utter garbage and which contribute nothing to peoples' lives.

If you find a specific model you're interested in I'd recommend hitting up avsforums. There's no greater source for anything A/V related out there in my opinion.

Do be aware that the sleazier stores often steer you to the TV's they want you to buy, the ones that make them the most profit. They do this by messing with the colour, brightness and contrast controls. They also may mess with the sound but not as often. If a TV you liked in another store looks washed out in the next for sure they have messed with the controls. Costco has Haier TV's, bought the girl one for her room, great picture, but very poor sound. She runs it through her ghettoblaster for better sound. She has a $200 TV with a with a 5 year warranty, she's happy and I'm happy with the price.
