It's usually called Laser Ablation, it is ain't new, It's used to clean dies all the time.

I could also be extremely dangerous.

You can kind of see the rust piling up on this one. Some of it seems to be vaporized.

Not trying to argue against the dangers of laser exposure but it took the mirrored coating off of those CD's in short order. Wouldn't a glass mirror suffer the same fate? Beyond a prefectly reflective metal surface (?), what reflection might there be to worry about?
