I love my new X5

We got the diesel with all the trimmings- 73K car for 60 with discounts. I thought it might not be powerful enough (we also have a V8). I was wrong. The torque more than makes up for the lack of horsepower. And the car can cruise at 80 and return 27mpg.

We looked at the Porsche (sky high price stripped/even reasonable options take it to stratosphere and it was unavailable*) Audi (it was a schoolbus) and Mercedes (numb steering, none of the options we wanted were available*) but settled on the BMW again. Couldn't be happier. If you're thinking about getting a diesel don't hesitate.

*meaning "I can possibly get it for you but you're not going to see much of a discount"

Terrific SUV. We love our X5's and the diesel makes great sense. Congratulations.

A buddy of mine bought an X5M about two months back. Says he hasn't enjoyed a car so much since his F40. That truck is absolutely ridiculously fast.

One of my favorite rigs. I'm surprised that you could get a discount like that, are they about to do a facelift on the X5? What part of the country are you in? From what I've heard, they are beyond hot here in CA.

No only minor changes for 2013- I think a redesign is coming in 2014 though. I'm in suburban Washington DC (MD). They had a $1,000 BMW "Drive for America" discount, a $4,500 "eco" discount and then the dealer discounted too (they had a $1,500 loyalty "discount" and added greatly to that). The cost of the car to us was actually below the invoice price. Also we still need to apply BMW CCA discount which is $1,000 I think. We got one of the last 2012s- have only had it a week now. The problem was one dealer said they would do it and I shopped their deal (without naming them of course); turned out they couldn't get an allocation and the other dealer (who was actually $300 higher) did.

I really wanted an X6 V8 or a Cayenne S but that would have been $20K more- it made no sense. Very glad we got this instead. This is our third X5.

Congrats. I'm jealous.

We found ourselves shopping for a new car for the wife (her's was totaled).

I *REALLY* tried to get her into the X5 Diesel, but no dice. She is going for the Acura MDX instead. Oh well - her car, her choice (and probably the more economical option).

Now, to find a good late model MDX she likes. . . .

Keep us posted on how the X5 holds up for you.

My sister is on her third Acura MDX up in MN., (snow country). She just loves them. I have a buddy here in L.A. who is on his second one in a row. Both he and my sister are not *car people*, but typical affluent retail consumers who just fall in love with a great appliance. They apparently never break. Either that or they both consider the service bills to be "normal". IDK.

I'd be perfectly happy with an MDX if I needed that size SUV but I'd be head over tits for an X5 diesel. What a great rig.

Just saw one at the dealer the other day. $100k and climbing! I would have fun in it too. This one was White with bright red leather interior. Not for the subtle but I would still take it.

Although I was happy to be out from under a car payment, I was pretty peeved when my 2002 X5 got smacked from behind. Was a great vehicle, and protected us well. We were hit HARD.

If I could get my wife out of her 328i convertible a x5 would be on the short list.

So any updates on the X5 diesel?

My wife is looking at 2011 X5 diesel with 50K on the clock for $25K.

Thoughts?

With good options I saw they were in the 80's when I stopped at the dealer for an oil filter the other day. I drive mine for work and do enjoy it. But it has several design flaws:
It's a 2011 X5 and the flaws are the Vanos timing unit (screws back out and it falls into the bottom of the oil pan - 8 to 10 hour repair job), the electric water pump failed at 48k and overheats immediately. There is no temperature gauge on that 10-14 X5 build date, so you have no idea what's coming until the dummy light goes on. The oem battery was also defective. All repaired under warranty, but these are all serious design flaws from a company who thinks they build perfect machines. On the plus side, at 6000 lbs the car is super solid and the fit and finish is excellent. The exhaust system is stainless. So a big plus. Can't wait to see the new Jaguar and Maserati suv's, as they are coming right after Porsche and BMW.

No ownership experience but I've driven them and that's a lot of rig for the $$.

I have a 2011 X5d with around 55K on it. So far it has been a great SUV. I use it as a daily driver and to tow to the track. Works extremely well for both. That sounds like a great price. What are the options on the one you are looking at?

I have heard of a LOT of issues with the drivetrain in these cars. Anyone with poor ownership experiences?

Since we are still building the house, I told my wife to pass on it. A search showed plenty of them out there.
