Question on Painting, Primer, and Covering Stains

I have a question for the painting experts:

My plaster ceiling had quite a bit of staining from when my roof leaked (before new roof). Now I'm painting my family room and I'm wondering how many coats of primer do I have to use or have I done enough to start regular paint - I used a stain covering primer but this morning, the stains still show thru the primer slightly (this is after 2 coats of Zinzer Stain Cover Primer. See photos below

This photo shows the stains - top left of photo:

This photo shows some of the stains showing thru the primer (after 2 coats):

I've always had good luck with Kilz products.

One word....KILZ !

Kilz is a primer paint that covers all sorts of stains, and is a good base for changing colors.

Great....I bought this one because it was $10 more per gallon than Kilz and the guy at Home Depot recommended it (I should know better than to trust HD staff).

I think I will apply one more coat and see how it looks before painting. It may cover a little bit better now that the first two coats are thoroughly dry and the original staining was pretty bad (much worst than it shows in the photos).

ok, ok..

I'm going to Home Depot at lunch to get some more rollers. I suppose I can buy a can of Kilz (since I will be applying one more coat - might as well take your advice). Good thing I'm filthy rich.

Before you spend anymore money, just paint it and see if the stain will show through. I bet by the second coat, it will be gone. I think you should be fine. Remember our paint, (worst down here in LA) is watered down from the rest of the country. YOu will be fine.

Take the other paint back and tell HD that it's crap. Buy the Kilz and you are $10 ahead.

Aluminum paint also works for stains and if you have to cover over felt markers.

How long does it take for fire code sheetrock to dry out? It's thick and I'll bet it's still damp.

Use a cheap moisture meter to check it...

Do some research, and whatever you come up with, email it to Paco Anton.

It's plaster. And the roof leaked about 3 years ago before I put on a new roof. It's very dry now. A friend of mine who owns a fire/water damage company tested it with a moisture meter about a year ago and it was dry.

Added a 3rd coat of primer (this time using kilz), 2 coats of paint and I think I'm good for another 20 years. it's 2am and I'm exhausted so the furniture will have to wait until tomorrow but here's the end result:

Looks good! In my early years I used to work for a fire/water restoration company, we bought Kilz by the 5-gallon bucket. One project was renovating a house that had a fire and lots of smoke damage, we literally sprayed every interior surface of that house with Kilz.

I searched Google for Kilz and it came up with this.

Didn't you start a thread about refinishing those walls a while back? How did they turn out?

Yes I did - that was for the wood refinishing and to date....I've done nothing. Similar to the many other projects on my list.
