06 07 Cayman?
These seems like good deal but I don't see one where the IMS issue or any other issues addressed. How much does it cost to address the issues and how much mileage can I expect once addressed? Was hoping to daily drive it. School me. Thanks
|
IMS issues are quite rare on the M97 engines. They also cannot be replaced without splitting the case, so no easy replacement. I've owned several, they are fantastic cars.
|
My 2006 987.1 Cayman has been great. A few interior quality issues (headliner, plastic with rubber coatings, door lever plastic bits). The only thing I would recommend is an aftermarket ECU tune. The original programming has the after-cat O2 sensors a bit more sensitive than the later versions and can lead to false "Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold" CELs.

Check with L&N engineering, or Jeff Alton
There is a group that has bad cylinders and will go oval after a time. Pretty spendy fix. |
A standard 987 will likely be my next P-car when the time comes.
|
A lotta car for the $$. IMS and other motor issues are less than 1% so your odds are very good if the car had regular oil changes every 5k miles. I own a 2009 with the updated motor (no IMS). My brother just bought a 2008 Cayman GT w/updated 3.8L Vision motor, 360hp, JRZ... Wowza!
|
I have an 07 and it's great.
|
Matt sold us a 2007 Boxster S (987)_beautiful driving and looking car. No problems whatsoever.
987s should not be lumped in with the problems of the 986s. |
You should post in the Cayman forum. I have an 06 as a DD for 3/4 of the year, I don't worry about IMS and I expect to keep it until I can afford a GT3 :D

Lovely cars... I'd get an S if possible, used it's not that much of a difference anymore, but it's more torque. Mine did a water pump at 40K mi, and 2 coolant caps... All in all <$1000 over 3 years and surprisingly easy to work on ! 2 of my friends lost their engine though: one 07, one 08 to IMS issues. One was a track junkie, the other not at all... So i would take the 1% with a grain of salt and possibly purchase aftermarket insurance if you feel your luck is rotten ;-) Personally I am out of the 05-08 market until a solution is found, but I think the Cayman S (mine was 06) was my favorite of all the cars I've owned - sublime handling ( only blemish was an annoying gas pedal at low revs giving you too little or too much revs and making perfect take offs harder than any other porsches I drove). Good luck !

I just got into one about 6 months ago. I will echo the annoying e throttle mapping in low RPMs. Otherwise, it's been a real peach thus far. Tremendous value for the price.
Can't comment on comfort as the PO put on some stiff coilovers. I will say this though: the steering is VERY sensitive to rotational imbalance, so roadforce balance your tires and get some nice ones. The PO left the car parked for a while, and it developed a flat spot near the edge that somehow warped the metal a bit. I have a serious highway speed shake, but am determined to kill these tires before I put a set of PSS. |
I have an 07 S great car!

i bought the wife an 07 cayman tiptronic. The only problem we had was a bad water pump at 40k. I changed it myself with a couple of hundred in parts. wasn't really that hard to work on. It was not an S, and felt a little anemic. BUT i had my 996 turbo at the time, so anything else is going to feel slow.
I would love to pick up an 06 or 07 cayman S with a little bit higher miles for a little play toy. You can find them sometimes with sub $20,000 price tags. |
Thank you guys! All info are appreciated.
I thought about them 06 Boxter S. Heres a sharp one I found but.. I'm just not into convertibles... http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e7ea53044e.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
There's an 09 Cayman with less than 20k miles, looks to be a PDK model, silver over green, at a small dealership in my neighborhood asking $31,850. Seems to be a reasonable deal.
|
I wasn't into convertibles until I bought a Boxster. Worst case you can get a hard top. I find the Boxster to be a little more fun than the Cayman. The Cayman is more capable from a track perspective but the Boxster is more playful and tossable.
|
If the car has over 40K, its fine. Change the oil more frequently then factory spec and drive the piss out of it. These engines are meant to be worked hard.

As a SoCal resident, I do oftern wonder about the convertible aspect and what I'm missing out on, but the extra cargo room is pretty effing sweet. One thing I have noticed is that this car loves to hydroplane. I can't tell if it's the wider tires or what. I'm running 225/285 currently. |
07 Cayman S checking in here. Fantastic car. The only complaints I have so far are that these cars are prone to squeaks and rattles from the rear hatch, especially in cold weather. Chock it up to a super stiff chassis. I will echo the strange throttle mapping at low RPMs -- normal takeoffs are weird. Not difficult, mind you... just... weird. The stock exhaust note was also a little conservative for my tastes, but a Fabspeed Maxflo system fixed that. Best upgrade I've ever done to a car.
Did the ECU remap really make that much of a difference? |
Could someone explain to me the process of the ECU reflash? How does it work? Like, do you pay the auto shop for doing it, or the software company, or both? I don't totally get it. I'm used to dealing with 1980s Porsches, in which you just buy a performance chip and install it.
|
CJ. We have a great option. Easy to do. I'll drop you a message on Facebook. You can do it at home.

Weird, 225/285? Because ALL of the stock tire sizes (18" or 19") were 235 in the front. |
I've actually made some visual individualization changes to my car in the past couple weeks: Boxster Spyder side intake grilles to replace the "gills" of the stock side intakes as well as silver Cayman R-style decals to keep the black-n-silver theme going. Now I can actually pick my car out of a lineup!

That looks awesome!

Nice CJ, I like it!
I had a 2006 Cayman S with full Fabspeed and the FVD tune. Compared to other Caymans I felt like the entire range of acceleration was more linear and it definitely pulled harder at the top end. It also had PSS9s, deep sump, GT3 LCAs, was lowered and aligned to Cayman R specs, and probably a few other things I am forgetting. It was an absolute scalpel, way more fun than a stock Cayman S. |
Jeez, Matt, many Caymans have you owned?! I think my next move will probably be the ECU reflash, but I would like to lower it slightly, too -- nothing too dramatic: I still want to be able to pull into my in-laws' driveway. I've been reading up on sway bar setups, and have also thought about going to a stiffer rear bar to make the car a bit more neutral instead of its current tendency to understeer slightly.

Full disclosure, I came from a Subaru WRX where I ran 225 all around. Maybe the additional traction and pizza cutter tires made it feel like I never hydroplaned? All I know is rain or dry, I drove it the same. In the Cayman, rain driving requires more attention. |

Looks good CJ!

CJ - nice lookin car you got. I went the other route - black accents on my silver car. No script, though.
I just got my tuned program back from Softronic. Can't wait to flash it tomorrow and go for a test run. |
