Cooking in kitchen without vent hood

I'm house shopping. First things I look for is a vent hood. Not one that blows air back to me. If not, I look to see if I can penetrate the house with a retrofit.

How do you cook without a vent hood?

ok i'm just gonna have to say that this is one hell of a "first world problem"

https://www.google.com/search?q=first+world+problems+meme&espv=2&biw=1137&bih=725&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjv9t3Tqv3LAhWIeSYKHV7_AOgQ_AUIBigB&dpr=0.9#imgrc=_

I cook everyday and I have lived in houses that had hoods and some without. While a hood is convenient, it by no means would preclude me from cooking. 95% of the time I didnt even turn the hood on.

Step 1. remove smoke detector.

But seriously... we have some old houses in our hood (pardon the pun) some have a gravity fed chimney over the stove or just put the stove by a window. Come to think of it pretty sure my very old first house didn't have a vent hood.

Yup, hood is for mistakes... of course, depending on what kind of range, they are nice to have. For example mom's range w/ a built in grill... but even then hood only gets turned on when the grill is in use

Piping will only take up space up in the spice cabinet! I can't say I have noticed huge differences, except when braising meat. My kitchen has a window 3 feet from the range, so that's easy. If it wasn't $$$ and a hole in the roof, I'd retrofit too. I do have a straight shot.

IMHO, you can always find things to improve on your house. And spend tons of time and / or money. In the end it will be worth the same on many of these "improvements". Most people don't cook. They will not care if I have a hood. So why worry about upgrading it. I'd rather spend my money on something important, such as a new rifle or bicycle!

asian stir fry? come on.

and yes it's a first world problem..well, third world is cooking on a dung fire under a tree, so no..it's technically not

If the house is on a raised foundation they have those cool stove tops with vents around the edges that suck up the fumes and duct it under the house and out to the side.

My current place has one of those combo microwave/exhaust hood, marginal at best... but then I would have a huge Wolf industrial stove and marble counter top if I had the $$$.

Viking, you know you want it!

Hmmm, looks like those prices are for the vents only! I'm sure I have ovens with the downdraft vents built in.

I have seen this - works extremely well. I think if I get a new stovetop, this is the way to go. Of course, that's when it breaks ...

Searing, frying, etc is a pain w/o vent hood - need to open windows and clean greasy surfaces.

I'd definitely want a vent hood or room for one.

Talking about downdraft hoods. No one wanted to sell me one because the don't work all that well. It takes a lot of air moving to convince steam and grease laden hot air that wants to go up to move sideways and down. Every kitchen designer said they look great but make a lot of noise without doing as good of a job.

Cliff, my better half is Chinese. The vent hood is a necessity. The more cfms the better. Life without it is barely worth living. At least that's what my wife has ingrained in my mind.

Vash, down draft is a mistake. It robs hot air from the flame and its a pain in the ass to install with limited crawlspace. Just remember, hot air, steam, moves upward, not down to the downdraft is working harder just to get rid of the smell. Vent-A-hood is one of the best hood for the buck. They have a dual motor unit that will pump out 1200 (1500, maybe?) on top of my head. Its quiet and no SS grease trap/grill to slow air down or noise, but it requires cleaning frequently. An import call Winstar makes a damn good unit, and its a lot cheaper then most upper end brands like Wolf or Viking. We install lots of them and they suck, really suck well. It need to vent through roof, that for sure. Cook outside, now that you are in paradise up there.

Vash, you know you like food. Therefore, you probably cook more than most here. A vent hood is a necessity. You know it, I know it, the rest of these guys consider a chili dog's creation to be "cooking".

North of 1000 cfm, the size and height of the hood are critical, etc. No downdrafts.

Even that won't take care of serious smoke-making, at which point you go outside and cook there.
