Simple genius marketing

One of the things I sometimes think about as I squeeze a little dab of toothpaste on my toothbrush is all the commercials I saw over the years on TV where they showed the maximum amount of toothpaste possible to put on a brush. It took me year to figure out only a little dolip is more than enough.

Like this. Lots of unnecessary product used. Genius if you sell toothpaste.

One of the other great ones, the simple word "repeat" in the instructions for shampoo. Like a normal person needs to do two rounds of shampoo.

I saw an article that the average liquid laundry soap bottle has a cap way bigger than needed to measure out the proper amount for a load of laundry. Most people just use way more soap then is needed.

What marketing ideas can you remember that are just designed to get the customer to flat out waste the product faster than really needed.

Large portions at a restaurant don't count. You can always ask for a to-go box for the part you did not eat.

I think the instructions call for a pea sized dollop. Right?

The cost of an engagement ring should equal 3 months salary.

Well, if you can't afford to throw away a few months salary on something totally stupid then you definitely can't afford to be married.

There's some real life wisdom there.

Car care products are the same as toothpaste -- the directions will often say to put the wax on the car, while putting on the cloth that you're using to apply is equally effective and more efficient. But then, bringing up methods of washing a car is likely to toss this thread into PARF.

Yanno I don't think I have ever in my life read the instruction on toothpaste. I just remember every commercial they put the S shaped glob of toothpaste on the brush like that was normal. And of course all the people they showed squeezing out the log size blob had a huge perfect smile.

The only reason I do the shampoo rinse and repeat thing is that I forgot I had already washed my hair 30 seconds ago. I'm either too tired, or getting old. Or both!

Here's genius marketing: The Mercedes-Benz G-class.

A 30 year old design that for the longest time was not available in the US, except in the form of grey-market vehicles. So... MBUSA mgmt says - hey - we can capitalize on this. Let's throw a couple marketing dollars at this, throw a few bells and whistles on the truck, and sell it for around $100k. Well, it worked. Hit the market just after the height of the SUV craze, and sold very well. So for very little marketing dollars, and just about zero R&D dollars spent on the car, they made a ton of money on the SUV that defined the 'keeping up with the Jones' mentality of the early 2000's...

Marketing genius.

Any Hardee/Carl's Jr. Burger commercial is marketing genius. That Tex-mex one is. Brilliant.

Clearly the prostitution business should take this one up as their new thing.

My dentist once told me that toothpaste isn't even necessary. That was in CA where they fluoridate the water. Here in OR they don't, so fluoride paste is a good thing.

The whole 2 Alka Seltzer was also a marketing ploy to get the product to match the jingle "plop plop fizz fizz"... Double the profits as well...

Reprehensible.

The victim's left buttock cheek undulates from the vicious assault.

Founding members of the "Marketing Hall of Fame" surely include the clever folks who came up with the idea for time shares and personal seat licenses.
