Possible 993 purchase, a few questions

I wasn't looking but a mechanic who did the trans on my race car has this in his shop doing a clutch. Customer wants to sell. 1995 cabriolet, 75k in miles, I think 4 owners, current one since about 40k. Not highly optioned but in nice shape for a car that has seen pretty regular use. Has aftermarket top with liner sagging, a few wear areas on the interior, normal road debris chips in front, etc.

How well does the AWD system hold up in these in terms of reliability?

He has the factory wheels but one is cracked so these were sourced. Any ideas on what they are?

Price range if it checks out?

Does the 993 continue to hold/appreciate in value? I wouldn't normally buy cars/motorcycles as investments but the classics in my garage have done better than the market and are more fun to look at and drive!

993s are holding their value, with the S's doing very nicely. I expect all 993s to start trending upward soon. I think they have very good appreciation potential, but it may be several years before we see that.

I would expect that car to sell for around $33,000-$35,000. Very, very nice examples sell in the 40's. Beaters go in the high 20's.

AWD is no problem on the 993. Of course it still is silly to have but it is a better system than in the 964.

No clue on wheels, but I'd go with a period correct aftermarket wheel such as a Fikse - or stockers - they are cheap to buy used.

The miles are nice and low, which helps on price Cab is a big price detractor. I don't think this is a >40k car, but I don't think it is a low 30s car any more either, due to mileage and condition. Of course that is open market / Ebay type pricing, so you will want to hit low. Try to get it under 30 and you will be ahead at any rate!

So, it sounds like you'd need one more wheel (I'd sell the ones that are on it), maybe a set of tires, and a top? And you'll have a fresh clutch. Do you trust the mechanic to provide a good PPI? Do you know what the seller wants for the car?

But seriously, I'd ask what the owner has in mind. You may be surprised. Never be the first one to throw out a number.

He's looking for $40k as a starting point. I need another car like a hole in the head but have some things I could sell and I would like a Cabriolet. If I can get it for low $30's it might be worth a shot. The mechanic will provide a good PPI with me by his side asking a lot of annoying questions :-) A buddy just picked up a pretty nice 84 Carrera from an estate, high miles but fresh J Walker motor for $20k so something may be in the air around here.....

I don't think there is any doubt the 993 will appreciate in value. In SoCal, that car would be close to $40k. It's the last air cooled Porsche AND the last hand built car. It's also the last 911 with the simple interior, raw feel, and raw sound. They're heavy for the HP, but still fun to drive.

I put 83,000 miles on my guards red 95 cab in six yeara and never had a single expense outside tires, brakes, and routine maintenance. I wish I still had it.

I drove my 993 today and I still can't get over what a great all-around car it is. I'm always amazed that a car can handle no well and ride so nice at the same time. One thing for sure is that the car won't lose value while you own it. The 1995s are nice because the secondary injection ports won't throw any check engine lights (headaches at emissions time) like the later years.

Those wheels are off of a 996 C4 (not the C4S), not very common. (oops, Max beat me to it...)

AWD and convertibles don't bring as much as ' normal' 993s. 993s have been climbing rapidly also and nice examples are easily in the 50s now.

It's a very nice looking car and I don't mind those wheels at all. It's the right color and what some may not be considering is how well cars stay preserved up in Jerry's neck of the woods. If they're garaged, they stay amazingly nice.

40k is definitely too rich. Maybe he threw out a number and you can try for less. Is this EXACTLY what you'd buy if you could spec it exactly to your liking? Well, if not, then don't pay market price. If you pay market price, you might as well cast a wider net and get what you EXACTLY want.
