Why is PPOT a boys club?

I understand the underlying reason (cars, guns & chainsaws, etc.), but I can only think of three regular female posters who have stuck around for any amount of time that are still posting...why is that...are "we" that bad ? Particularly interested in the female perspective...PG, FP and Angela...have I missed one ???

Maybe it truly is just a guy thing that I can't possibly understand 'cause I are one

First of all, how dare you presume to define our gender in this severely feminist day and age. Alot of us may belong to any of the letters in HBTQZWX... utopic Rainbow World.

Secondly, I would not call it boys club, rather old farts club.

Hope all is well at your end, btw. Looking forward to spring/summer!

Like race, gender is largely a social construct.

Honestly, how dare you bring this up.

I don't frequent the sites that my wife enjoys, and vica versa. I believe most women don't enjoy the things that most men enjoy. I'm generalizing here, but that seems to be true in most cases.

I don't relish the thought of going to horse congress like my wife is going to today with my daughter, while I don't expect either one of them to go with my son, and I next Saturday to Summit Motorsportspark, for opening test and tune on the dragstrip.

Although, current society thoughts are women and men are the same and can do all the same things, I think interests are different for men and women. Other women do say to me, they are surprised I work on my car or they wonder how I learned to do the work. But most have no interest in knowing themselves.

I joined PP over 10 years ago when my husband bought the Targa for me. It began as a way to learn about the car. We have used the car as a bonding topic. We do the work together and enjoy it. I slowly went from reading mostly the tech forums to mostly reading OT.

This is the only forum I frequent. I love off-topics. If I am having a hard day, it never fails someone on here will make me laugh. I am constantly learning something from the vast differences in the members here.

Congrats Porsche Gal for hanging in there and contributing. Janet 09 was given a hard time when she first joined and eventually dropped out. My wife has no interest in cars except as a form of transportation. Extra cars she thinks are like mosquitoes - something to be gotten rid of. I think diversity makes for an interesting forum. I enjoy everybody's opinions even Tabs especially if his econ forecasts come true....

One of the single ladies I used to work with always lamented how hard it was to find a nice man with intelligence AND with a job. I told her she was looking in the wrong places. She will be hard pressed to find a guy at the home and garden show or at the mall.

I invited her to come to some PCA meetings and the local astronomy club. She just could not get past the feeling that a car is just a big appliance and is still not a car person. She did discover she could enjoy astronomy. She ended up meeting a guy that was an engineer at a local high tech company. She went back to college and got a degree and is happily married to a engineer geek that was shy and always looks at his shoes in public. In the total darkness of a star party he could talk to anyone and he fell in love.

It is not just Pelican that is mostly a boys club. You can find that with many hobbies.

Hopefully it will change - but who knows? I test out political chatter - this forum is very 'vocal' in PARF and is a good barometer for how old farts are reacting to political news of the day, far more than many car sites I have been too, and that includes the Caddy site - so that should tell you something, guys.

I have worked on cars since high-school with my Dad, he thought it was important I know my way around a toolbox (I got to build/fix things too). It probably didn't hurt that we bought a Hillman Avenger for me, heck, I used to carry a basket to gather up the parts that would fall off the car. But, I learned a lot.

Do you get your daughters to work on things - maybe it needs to change there, in the father/daughter dynamic, not sure.

I don't think that differences are so bad - for example, we should embrace tabs' love for shoes, I love shoes - both mine and the car's -

There are a lot of ladies into cars (and chainsaws) unfortunately my wife isn't one of them (disclaimer: she bought me a Miata with her inheritance money).

I think part of the problem is we are a bunch of cranky sexist mofo's

But seriously, and now I am generalizing, men tend to be more rough around the edges (whereas women are soft and smooth and smell good and... what were we talking about?).

For instance if I walk across the alley to my buddy's garage/man cave I am greeted with "hey s**t-head!" to which I respond "F you dick lips!" and then he hands me a beer. Pretty sure my wife's knitting circle doesn't roll like that.

That being said I have see a few women drop in her and we take our good natures jabs at her jokingly but they take offence and are never heard from again.

It would be cool to have more ladies posting here.

I think my wife sums it up decently when I show her a joke or something I think interesting on here and she says, "UUUMMM OOOOOOKAY."

It is because men and women are fundamentally different and have different interests.

I think it starts with the fact that Porsche is a brand that appeals primarily to men. Second, the forum is an offshoot of a technical BBS that caters to DIY mechanics who again skew male. Finally, the focus of Pelican's customers is primarily older cars that are out of warranty, mostly air cooled cars. That adds up to a lot of men and not a lot of women starting out on the site. The initial reaction most females get when the boys realize there's a new girl on the board probably has some chilling effect as well. I still remember the thread calling out a woman named Janet with the thread title being something like "Janet Planet is Hot!".

Let's face it...PP is primarily inhabited by 50-ish+ men. Thought I saw an age poll recently. As indicated, air cooled Porsche's are the infatuations from our youth. I got here via the Tech Forum years ago. Just migrated to OT and PARF in recent years as the need for Cool Collar research has waned a bit. Guessing that's a similar genesis for many of us.

I migrated from the 944 form... even though I qualify as part of the cranky old man club at +50. Left the 944 tech form once if figured out "how to turbo my N/A".

However I was not issued a a cranky old man card due to my wacky fondness for hybrid & electric cars, alternate energy, ever though I still love all things mechanical.
