Unidentified planes come at you and HOW do you not go defensive?

US Navy gets fly by by Russian jets on numerous occasions and doesn't do anything but shoot a video. They later claim the jets were unarmed.

WTF?

Russia jets make 'simulated attack' passes near US destroyer: US - AOL

GH85Carrera 04-14-2016 05:09 AM

I sure have to guess the Navy knows more about those jets then the video shows. They do have AWACS or the E-2D Hawkeye. And we are not at war with Russia. Putin is crazy but I can't imagine he wants to take out one of our ships and declare war.

Putin is like a rabid dog, no telling what he will try to do next. I think he still knows an direct attack on the US Navy is a real bad idea.

J P Stein 04-14-2016 05:11 AM

You can bet your sweet ass that the defensive systems are locked up on the approaching planes. Good practice for all.

We have to hope that no one gets trigger happy.

patz 04-14-2016 05:13 AM

An AWACS isn't up 24/7. They are only up when on active offensive or defensive endeavors. As my buddy the former Navy jet jockey tells me.

There has to be more to this.

widgeon13 04-14-2016 05:14 AM

He's just pushing the oman's buttons since our ROE are probably, don't return fire until they sink one of our boats!

Then of course it would be a red line in the sand. (as the tide comes in)

stomachmonkey 04-14-2016 05:27 AM

They reportedly buzzed them some 20-30 times a day for a few days.

Not like we were not aware of who they were.

Quite possible that crazy Russian wanted us to pull a Han Solo.

BE911SC 04-14-2016 06:04 AM

Probably been going on for decades and now, in the era of smart phones with cameras, we see the video on CNN as if it's the provocation that led to WW3.

BeyGon 04-14-2016 06:40 AM

More Putin with the stick in the eye for obaama, nothing obaam will do about anything anyway. After Benghazi what can you expect.

What can he do? Order them to shoot down an unarmed airplane and start WW3? I really don't want that.

+1.

I just hope that the Navy keeps excellent videos of all their flybys because eventually that Russian will make a mistake and crash and I don't want there to be any question of what really happened.

Chocaholic 04-14-2016 07:01 AM

We should have scrambled about 6 armed F-14's and escorted them out of the area. But alas, Putin knows what he's dealing with and no appropriate response was going to happen.

URY914 04-14-2016 07:02 AM

Obama will send a tweet out to Putin, #no more flyovers, please. ;)

Shaun @ Tru6 04-14-2016 07:08 AM

Putin is desperate for attention, he must be sad with every major world leader ignoring him. He also needs something for the homefront with his economy grappling to be larger than Honduras'.

The destroyer was 60 Kms from the base where the airplanes came from. A long hovering just off the fantail Mil helicopter visits several times as well.

So, like the old song lyrics...

"Whos' zooming who?"

I imagine our guys had a handle on it.

sammyg2 04-14-2016 07:12 AM

Multiple US fighter jets with missile lock on those a-hole rooskies would have a demotivational effect on their fun and games.

But whinging his hands like a wimp ninny is a good strategy too .....

just showing what Putin can do to obaama, at any time, any place. It's pretty sad our world has come to this, maybe Hillary can talk to Putin and tell him to wait until she is elected, then she can reset the button.

Who cares being on missile lock if you know they are not going to shoot you? Is it really worth it to prove you are right despite potential consequences?

you can't be slow enough to think a thread about Putin, jets buzzing American Navy isn't PARF material, can you?

Dickwad. No one sad dick about Putin.

The Tomcat was retired years ago.

We have defenses that can deal with a missile but if they wanted to drop some dumb bombs on the ship they would be screwed IF they thought they were doing another dry run. If they were going to attack for real all Russia would have to show for it is a bunch of dead aircrew.

my my, you need to go back and read some of this, and Putin is the one calling the shots on those planes, he knows he can do what he wants with obaama living in DC.
As he knows what he will do when Hillary is elected.

Pretty much sums it up. Noone in the world fears us anymore, we are seen as weak and impotent in the world especially to Russia and China as well as Iran with the recent abduction of Navy personnel after we just gave them billions back with their new deal.

creaturecat 04-14-2016 08:23 AM

seems like it was a fly by. nothing more.
what's with all the hatred and panic? sheesh.

Otter74 04-14-2016 08:24 AM

If only our president and armed forces were as big of a big tough guy as internet keyboard warriors are, we'd be all set.

So what would you have the captain of that fine vessel do in this case?

That was the direction it started in. This is political posturing by Putin, "Look how tough I am."

PARF, the "P" stands for politics, as in, political posturing.

This is like the scrub on the football team trying to start a fight with the star on the opposing team. Best thing to do is laugh, ask if that is the best they have and play on. If they were doing this a lot, I would have men on deck peeling potatoes with instructions to toss them in the air as Maverickovich and Gooski approach for their flyby. Even if you have a 1/100 shot of hitting, eventually you are going to have a Russian bird in the water without a shot fired.

Oh, BTW, they were not "unidentified"

the leftists here miss the point, the fact the Russians feel free to do that anytime they want. It's not an isolated incident, it is what Putin want's to do with our weak limp leader living in DC. Maybe you would like to have that Captain just give up his Destroyer like the Captain of the Pueblo did while LBJ was in charge. These people understand a weak person in charge.

flipper35 04-14-2016 08:44 AM

What I am asking is what would you have the captain do?

The Captain did what he was told, that's all there is. There is no way they didn't know exactly who/what these planes were, unlike the title of this thread. Someone up the chain set this in motion and let Putin make a public spectacle of our Navy.
Not the first time, just awhile back they let Iran do it. Weak "leader" we have.

Rick Lee 04-14-2016 08:49 AM

AFAIK, painting a plane with a missile lock is the equivalent of pointing a pistol at someone's head and cocking the hammer back. I highly doubt we've ever done that with these fly-bys, but it would be an escalation if we did. Until then, why would Russia stop? It makes Putin look strong and us look weak. There's no downside for him. China didn't think twice about sacrificing a pilot back in 2001, and they got a huge intel and propaganda boost out of it. I don't think Putin has anything to lose here and he knows we won't do anything about it.

BTW, why would a USN ship ever let any plane get that close to it? All kinds of bad things could happen, by accident or design.

BK911 04-14-2016 08:58 AM

Should have seen what we were doing to news helos in the gulf ~1988. And unmarked small surface craft.

I agree that they knew exactly what aircraft was up and about and which were coming to buzz them.

I didn't ask what you would do as captain, I asked what you would have the captain do. As in, pretend you are our leader and your orders to this guy would be?
