Lightening Strike Across the Street

At about 7AM I hear a huge thunder clap and a very bright light. I look outside and across the street I see a large branch of the tree on the ground without any bark. Upon closer inspection I could see the path of high energy. Even the back of the tree was 'barked' along the electron path.

I took a few pieces of the wood. Maybe I will make a baseball bat out of it and burn into the side 'Wonderboy'...

Wow. A bit too close for comfort, but still very cool to see Mrs. Nature up close and personal. Maybe dig around the base and see if you can find any fulgurites.

Some good lookin' grain in there. Wonder what kind of spoon stock it would make...

If possible, you may want to check around in the dirt - if sandy enough, it may have fused into a rough glass making neat shapes...

That's pretty cool. We had a strike behind the duplex that we were renting years ago, it hit a cable box in the easement. It fried about half the stuff in our house, and my sister in law was on her cell phone which was charging. The phone heated up instantly in her hand, hot enough that she dropped it and screamed because it was burning her ear. Powerful stuff.

Back when I was a kid we lived on base at Maxwell AFB in Alabama. They have two golf courses and the one close to our house was full of cart paths that were fun to ride our bikes on when the course was closed. One day a thunderstorm popped up and we all dove for the shelter of the numerous rain & lightening shelters. They are much like picnic table with the roof overhead. The blowing wind was getting us wet but that was better than being in the direct rain. There were three of us sitting there.

All of us noticed our hair standing up and thought that was cool. Then a tremendous and simultaneous flash of lightning and thunder rocked us all. We were all blinded and deaf for a little while. It was terrifying. We finally got our senses back and the rain had almost stopped. We inspected the shack and the lightning rod on top of the shelter was partially melted. It was obvious the bolt hit the shed and the bolt of lightning was just a few feet from hitting us.

I don't ever was to get that close to lightning ever again.

I saw lightning hit a tree in my backyard, about 40' from the house. Branches flying, pine tree. After the storm died down, went to check it out. Bark was blown off, tree still warm. I was told the sap instantly boils......

Saw a pine turned into popcorn by lightning. The wood popped like popcorn kernels.

Had a similar experience in Dec when lightning took out a huge cypress tree across the road. Aside from the fright and spectacle, the resultant power surge knocked out virtually every electrical device in my house, Was a bad day for the insurance company...

One of the ladies my wife knows is Blonde to the very core.

My favorite quote from her is "We had a lot of thunder last night, but fortunately no lightning!"

We had almost the exact same thing happen to a large oak tree on the back corner lot of the previous home we moved from.

The lightning strike came down the tree from an upper branch, blew a hole of dirt out at the tree roots, ran across the ground, traveled along the low voltage sprinkler system valve wiring up around the side yard, took out the basement heat pump compressor, followed the sprinkler system wiring around the front yard into the garage, took out the sprinkler controller and the GFCI outlet it was plugged into.
