Paging vonsmog

Hey vonsmog,

Can you recommend some good restaurants for dinner in the Rochester area? Traveling for work and food has been hit or miss here so far.

Thanks!

There are none! Rochester is a one horse town, and he died about 20 years ago!

Really I don't go out to eat much, (maybe 3-4 times a year) as I am too cheap and have seen too many dirty restaurant kitchens. I'm lucky as my wife feels the same way I do, plus she loves to cook. Nether of us are what you would call "Foodies" We eat healthy and most of what we like is not in restaurants. Sorry I can't be of any help, but I can ask around. What part of town will you be in and what kind of food do you like?

Thanks for the reply... You just confirmed what I was afraid of... I sent you a PM, though just in case you think of anything.

Thanks!

Oh man ... I have been to food deserts before. Where Applebees is the top spot.

Just use Yelp. It is pretty reliable. Anything 3 stars and under, I'd avoid. 3.5 and up is usually decent.

I currently live in somewhat of a food desert were most of my neighbors get excited when a Domino's Pizza opens.

There is some good stuff to be found but it's nothing like the food mecca I moved away from.

Really frustrating.

Thanks for the PM, Von. We've actually been to Dinosaur and Sticky Lips. They were okay. Also went to some decent places up on the lake, but that was last summer when the weather was warmer.

Skytrooper: I'm all ears. Please share. We went to Aladdin's Mediterannean on Monroe last night. It has been consistently good and is pretty affordable. I'd love to find a place that has some relatively healthy options, at least not fried bar food. Places with a view would be nice to.

I'm here with about 8 people...

Thx!

IF you don't mind a bit of a travel. I've been to the new york wine and culinary center and enjoyed it.

A couple that come to mind that are near downtown:

1. Beale St by the corner of Gregory St & South Ave, New Orleans fare

2. Tap & Mallet At the corner of Gregory St & Cayuga, Craft beer, burgers, all sorts of tasty stuff

3. The Old Toad, This is one of my favorites. A pretty damn authentic British pub. The food is excellent...and so is the Scotch selection.

I feel I should revive this thread as I've spent 5.5 of the last 6.5 weeks in Rochester and found some good places... some mentioned in this thread and others not. So here goes:

Trata - great fusion of foods and neat atmosphere in the old Armory

Blu Wolf Bistro on Park Ave - I had a Royale with Cheese ('cuz of the metric system, LOL)

Tony D's - it was recommended to order whatever the specials of the night are because they are fantastic, and they were fantastic! Otherwise, the menu is pretty simple.

Rooney's - High quality, good service

Napa Wood-fired Pizza - Good flatbread pizzas

One of the guys we were working with also recommended the Next Door Grill but we didn't make it there... maybe next trip. Also went to Black and Blue one night but decided that while good, it really wasn't worth the price.

Anyway, thanks for all the responses. I don't think I have to go back for a while but am sure I'll be back eventually.
