Need Help Identifying This Spider...

Here is a pic of a spider that a friend took while in the Amazon. He said the body was about the size of a golf ball. Towards the back it was purplish. He was living with the Indians for a few weeks. These people live in the jungle. The Indians said they never seen this type spider before. Scary looking. The Indians told him not to mess with it, they thought it might be very poisonous - how they figured that is unknown. He told me the thing had a thick web and it reminded him of a train trestle the way it was woven. The pic was taken at night with his cell phone.

He knows I respect spiders and asked me to find out more about it. I looked through many spider photos online and could not find anything like it. He may have discovered a new one?

Any ideas?

Golf ball size or not, if I tried to take a picture of that spider with my cell phone, I would have been standing back so far away, it would have shown up as an unrecognizable tiny speck.

I do so love the banter and wit but I really am trying to find out what this spider is. Any direction will be met with appreciation and positive energy!

The Indians don't work at Amazon, they live in the Amazon. Rumor is they don't get a lot of sick days.

The Amazon is a very, VERY big place. It would help off you narrowed down the location a bit more. It does have a body like an orb weaver, but I don't know which one. Maybe more info on where in the Amazon would help figure out which one.

I get what you were saying , your buddy wss working with the Indians that lived in the Amazon.

It does look a little like the recluse but the size is off and the recluse doesn't spin a web like that. The legs on the spider have spurs and the recluse legs are smooth.

Sounds like there are about 3,600 known species of spiders in the Amazon basin.

I texted him to find out the area he was in. Its Freddy Dodge of Gold Rush. He was there doing a segment. I don't know if he will tell me exactly or not due to the fact there is gold there. If he gives me precise coordinates you may not here from me for awhile!
