Rust Prevention

I recently moved really close to the beach and my poor old (but very original) '70s Jeep Wagoneer is suffering. The poor thing has a few scratches in her paint and now the salt air is making them rust and I was wondering if anyone could recommend something I could put on the exposed metal to prevent or even retard the rust. Obviously paint would be best but she has never been painted so I don't want to take that route. Any thoughts,

Consider using Rejex on the painted areas and Corrosion X or ACF-50 underneath.

A friend has an Amphicar that he regularly takes swimming. So, old untreated metal in the water on a weekly basis. Has treated his car 1-2 times per year with ACF-50. No signs of rust after years of use. Those products aren't cheap, but we're designed to protect expensive aircraft.

You will have a your work cut out for you using only PA.

I know you know a thing or two about cars, rust and paint. I would be diligent about digging out the rust by carefully masking around the scratch and using a fine wire brush and naval jelly. After neutralizing and completely drying I would fill the scratch with one of those touch up kits custom matched. You might go the extra step of using one of their primers if these scratches are deep.

Don't forget to grab the garden hose once and a while and rinse off the underside and inner fenders with fresh water.

I grew up in LA and had a neighbor who would wash his car every time he came back from a day at the beach. Probably overkill but his cars were always pristine.

I had a few bare chips on the leading edges of the hood and roof that were a perpetual PIA to keep rust free. J-B Weld stopped the corrosion at once - also it's touch-up paintable.

That Navel Jelly looks interesting. In the past I have kept reapplying a oil (Rust Check) similar to LPS3 until the rust action stops (over many weeks time) and then clean and touch up with paint, with the winter salt in Toronto it worked quite well. Once clean constant wax will help.

POR-15 has worked for me. If it's exposed to UV you need to top coat it with regular paint. I use Eastwood's chassis black to go over the top.
