you mugs have been everywhere, tell me about Guatemala in August

Where to go, what to do, what not to do, that sort of thing. Will be in Guatemala City, which is to hell and gone from the beach, for the first part of August. Do I need to get any shots before I go? The Navy was kind enough to give me shots for everything from the Clap to the Plague, but those are probably worn off by now. Not too worried about Zika virus, chances of me getting pregnant are vanishingly small.

Tobra, I haven't been there for a while but one of my favorite restaurants in Latin America is there. Not fancy or quick but the food is fantastic.

Where's Mikel, funny name for a restaurant.

I am sort of off Pacific seafood since that Fukashima reactor thing.

Will have plenty of facemasks

If its hot, don't go in the jungle. People go missing in the jungle during the hot months.

Looks like I need to get vaccinated for Typhoid and Hepatitis A, my Hep B is current. My primary care doctor can do it, so I don't have to go to the County Clinic for them, yeah!

Passport service at the post office available 7 days a week, go figure. Should have the passport back in a few weeks. My minions are already working on gathering supplies.

Golly, Guatemala in August! You know how to party.

I have never been there. I have nevr been to Nome, Alaska in February. You might try that next February.

I was in Savannah, GA in August. That was fun the day we had a heat index of 125. I was sure glad my 911 had great AC.

They don't call it the land of eternal spring by mistake.

It is like Palo Alto with more rain and milder winters

I have been to Guatemala a few times, drove through the country on my trip to Costa Rica even. I loved the people, the food, and the ice cream. Can't really name any hot spot for you, but it should be warm and you might need some rain jackets. I am surprised you need to get shots, I didn't need to get anything and I drove all the way to Panama.

It has the highest crime rate in Latin America and the highest murder rate, with 97% of all murders unsolved. https://www.osac.gov/Pages/ContentReportDetails.aspx?cid=15656 The US State Department classifies Guatemala's crime rate as "critical". I'd be very careful. Why are you visiting, and why in August? I assume someone is making you go.

My thoughts too. When we visited the Xunantunich Mayan ruins in Belize near the Guatemala border, we had a military escort.

Not so much making me as asking me. Friend of mine has been going annually for a while, what am I going to do, say no? Doing a bunch of free pediatric surgery. Well, not free, it will cost a bit to get down there and stay in a hotel. I am already putting the arm on some folks to give me some supplies to take with me.

I am hip to the "don't leave zone 1" thing, or whatever number it is, zone 10 I guess. It may be hard to believe, but I am quite circumspect and given to situational awareness when appropriate. Maybe I will dye my hair black and get a good tan before going so I blend in better.

I dated a young woman from Guatemala in college and flew down for a quick visit for Spring Break.

This was in the late 1970's, but from what I understand not much has changed: The schism between the truly poor and the rich surprised me. She was completely oblivious.

Have fun, head on a swivel...go make a difference!!!
